Posted on 07 March 2012 by Tea Server

Wikipedia Free of Traffic Charges on Telenor Powered Mobile devices

Posted on 28 February 2012 by Tea Server

Telenor Group and the Wikimedia Foundation today announced a new partnership to offer Wikipedia free of traffic charges on mobile devices to Telenor customers in Asia and Southeastern Europe. By making versions of Wikipedia available to 135 million mobile customers, Telenor Group and the Wikimedia Foundation demonstrate a shared commitment to increasing access to the free and open knowledge available on Wikipedia.

This initiative is part of the Wikimedia Foundation’s mobile strategy, which focuses on reaching the billions of people around the world whose primary opportunity to access the Internet is via a mobile device.

“The Wikimedia Foundation is working to remove barriers to free knowledge, and for most people around the world right now, cost and accessibility are the two biggest hurdles,” says Barry Newstead, Wikimedia Chief Global Development Officer. “We applaud Telenor for joining us to deliver free access to Wikipedia for their customers. Through this partnership, we move a step closer to providing the sum of all knowledge to everyone in the world.”

This partnership supports Telenor’s commitment to bring more value to its mobile customers. Especially, the company has pioneered the development of value-adding services to rural and underserved communities in Asia. Telenor involve millions in Asia through the I-Genius project, which has already reached out to 300,000 Bangladeshi students and school-children with a call to explore open knowledge on the internet.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Wikimedia Foundation. Telenor have pioneered affordable, mobile communications across much of Asia, and we have built a track record of offering vital services with a significant outreach” says Kristin Skogen Lund, Executive Vice President and Head of Digital Services at Telenor Group. “With this agreement, we are first in Asia to bring a vast knowledge source to the millions in underserved communities across the region.”

The 3-year partnership between Telenor Group and the Wikimedia Foundation will cover 135 million users. The agreement is signed by seven countries: Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Montenegro, and Serbia. By the end of the year, more markets are expected to join. The agreement will be implemented step by step throughout 2012, with the first markets launching during the second quarter.

Each local Telenor affiliate will establish technical solutions together with the Wikimedia Foundation. Customers with a Telenor SIM will be able to access a version of the encyclopedia for as many times as they like in a given period, at no charge, as long as they stay within Wikipedia’s pages.

Telenor Pakistan is yet to comment on this development and also confirm on the modalities and timeline for implementation of free of charges wikipedia browsing in Pakistan.

Easy Paisa gets Grant to Expand Services to Poorest of Pakistanis

Posted on 16 February 2012 by Tea Server

Billa & Melinda Gates Foundation has been gracious enough to give a grant of us$ 6.5 million to Easypaisa to fuel the adoption of its services among poorest households of Pakistan. A press conference was held at Telenor Pakistan’s head office in which the grant was announced.

Roar Bjaerum, Vice President of Financial Services at Telenor Pakistan, said

Financial exclusion of the lower income population is a systemic challenge in Pakistan. With more than 85% of population not having access to formal savings or credit products, many households are vulnerable to fluctuations in daily income and unable to absorb economic shocks from unexpected events. Easypaisa’s vision is to serve as a vehicle for financial inclusion for such households. The grant will help us accelerate adoption of Easypaisa services among poor and unbanked individuals

Rodger Voorhies, Director of the Gates Foundation’s Financial Services for the Poor initiative, said:

While Easypaisa has seen rapid adoption of its payment and remittance services, adoption of mobile financial services, like savings and insurance, has been slower, this grant aims to accelerate adoption of Easypaisa’s Mobile Account among poor and unbanked households to create a foundation for the delivery of savings, insurance, and other mobile financial services.

Such a significant grant by Bill and Melinda Gates foundation not only sheds light on the philanthropic nature of Microsoft’s founder, but also to his aim to fight poverty across the world. Hundreds and thousands of poor households will be able to access financial services in Pakistan if this grant is utilized effectively for the purpose it is provided instead of marketing the Easypaisa brand.

Telenor Plans Further Investment in Pakistan Operations

Posted on 08 February 2012 by Tea Server

Almost at the verge of its operational collapse in India as a result of its license being cancelled on account of spectrum auction curruption case, the Ab Mera Number Hai operator Telenor is reported to shift its financial focus in Pakistan and double their investment here.

Report from an English daily in Norway, The Foreigner, also states that Telenor is content with relaxed policies of Pakistani Authoriries as compared to the counterpart in India.

It is worth mentioning here that the news of such investments from Telenor comes at the time when it has posted 20% revenue growth in the last quarter and is in the race to bid for the upcoming 3G spectrum auctions in March 2012.

Excerpt from the report follows:

Telenor representatives immediately approached the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Chairman to set their forthcoming agenda in Pakistan following the revocation of partner Uninor’s license in India. Senior sources in the office of the PTA Chairman informed The Foreigner that Telenor is to invest double the amount in Pakistan after winding up their business in India.

These officials also revealed that Telenor is content with the PTA’s relaxed policies compared with the very strict rules and regulation and their implementation in India.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Chairman Dr. Muhammad Yaseen, who has already been the subject of media criticism for being extra favorable to Telenor, refused to comment on this issue when approached by The Foreigner by mobile.

No senior Telenor representatives in Pakistan would make any statement to The Foreigner regarding the current situation and revocation of the Uninor license in India either. Company Corporate Media Communication heads are trying to the stop the publication of the news by major media outlets in Pakistan by pressuring journalists and media moguls.

Telenor in Norway has not commented on the issue after being contacted by The Foreigner.

Karachi: Telecom Franchise Attacked Yet Again

Posted on 31 January 2012 by Tea Server

We had covered on the subject early this month when the Telenor and Mobilink franchise attacked in December last year. As Januray draws to close we have more. In a recent attack Warid sales officer was shot dead and just today we have another attack on Telenor franchise taking life of women and a security guard.

This brings the death toll in Karachi telecom franchise attacks to 5 in last two months and 4 in particular to Telenor franchise.

More on the matter from Express Tribune excerpts:

A security guard and a woman was killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire at Telenor’s franchise in the Nazimabad area of Karachi on Tuesday, reported Express News.

Three other people sustained injuries in the incident and have been shifted to a hospital.

The police reached the franchise to investigate into the incident. SP North Nazimabad Chaudhry Asad said that four men came to the franchise on two motorcycles and opened fire at it.

The police said that it was planned attack.

The attacks on mobile franchises have been on the rise in the city.

Yet again, who are the attackers and what is their real motive behind these attacks still remains unclear. If is it about target killing, why suddenly did telecom franchises become the target?
