How Can Facebook Help Generate More Business Leads?

Facebook with its massive outreach to over 800 million active users globally has become an ultimate promotional tool for businesses and simply cannot be ignored.

Those who label it as timewaster would be astonished by taking a quick browse on reasons for considering Facebook as a promotional
tool for any business:

It is the single platform that connects its users speaking 70 languages. According to Facebook stats, over 400 million users visit their newsfeed at least once every day; this connects (on an average) them to eighty community pages, Facebook groups or events posted by their contacts. Users consider this platform as a good tool to upload photos. It has become so popular that on an average over 250 million photos are being uploaded every day!

With an increasing use through mobile devices, this application is now accessed by more than 350 million users via their cell phones or Smartphones. This gives Facebook an extra ordinary outreach to people on the go.

I found an interesting illustration on Facebook stats at Mashable by infographis. According to these statistics, average age of Facebook users have increased from 36 to 38 years, 20% comment on other users photo, 26% like other user content, 22% comment on other user post or update, 10% inbox other user, 15% update their status.

But for business what this all means and how can they use Facebook in a simple way to attract more business and make more money? Let’s see few basic options on facebook for an enthusiastic business:

This starts with creation of a Facebook fan page for your business. This can be created under your Facebook account by using simple steps given here. This is your presence, your branding; your engagement with your customers, hence logically speaking, your profile picture should be the logo of your company or business. Once created, your simple page can be used for promoting a product, announcing a deal, responding to a customer’s enquiry etc.

The rule is simple; more active pages attract more LIKES. For instance Dr Pepper has the an active fan page with 10,851,243 fans of which 115, 914 were actually discussing the product and Wall Mart with 10,757,285 fans of which 159,794 contributing via comments. If you want to see more such examples, I recommend you visit Jim Tobin’s blog “Which Brands Have the Most Active Facebook Fans? Analyzing the Top 50.”

Other ways to engage the community is through competitions. This can generate a lot of interest. For example Culligan Pakistan has 17,700 fans of which 139 were engaged in conversation. Culligan’s strategy is to engage fans through quiz. One can learn how to initiate a quiz competition through this example.

Once you have a fan page, the next big thing is to attract fans. At this stage there are two possibilities, first is to use all social media channels such as twitter, your Facebook friends and linkedin and divert people towards your fan page. This is a slow process. If you really want to go quick, I recommend Facebook Ads.

General rule of thumb is that a fan can cost you anything between 1 cent and US$1.5, depending on demography you set. This is a useful tool, but in my view one should take advice from an expert before jumping onto Facebook Adverts. I recently advised a friend who runs a travel
business to use this option. He generated 140 leads in five days at a cost of US$50!

In my view every business has a common goal that is to generate more business and serve more customers – Facebook can certainly help is achieving this goal.
