TCF Rahbar Program-2

Posted on 12 February 2012 by Tea Server

Here comes the real part of the TCF Rahbar Program Hero Speaker Session. For details till here, check out my previous post http://kulsoom.wordpress.com/2012/02/12/tcf-rahbar-program/

So The kids of all sorts started coming in to listen to the HERO speaker of the day. Having no idea who they would get to talk to, who they would hear from, what would they learn and how is it going to benefit them, they blindly trusted their mentors and stepped in the hall which was neatly set up for the special HERO speaker’s session.

There were about 80 kids and 20 mentors in the room. The session began with Salman’s briefing to the kids. This entire time I was just doing my breathing exercise, calming down my nerves and roaming here and there to just bring back all the memories that I had to share with these kids. As soon as I was asked to come forward and begin talking, my pounding heart just made me feel the adrenaline rush inside me and boom I started off with full on energy. All eyes on me. All ears waiting to listen to the HEROIC story of my life.

Began with sharing how old I am. Took myself back to my childhood when I was perhaps a nobody to this entire world. Neither my family, nor my extended family. Told them how much i cried when i saw my father in so much stress and ultimately leaving the family forever when I was just 8. My heart just couldn’t control and just thinking about him made my eyes all teary and my voice shaky. My journey from being a shy,low-confident, studious chishmish kid to the modern, liberal, confident, literate person in few years time was supposed to be covered in 20 minutes or so. I shared with them the times when saving 100 rupees a month meant so much for me. I shared how I started travelling in buses since I was 10 years old and I led a life just like majority of our population does. I shared how difficult was it for me to finance my own studies when GOD helped me in the scholarship way and He covered it all up for me, lessening the biggest burden from my head. I shared how I always took challenges positively, took responsibility of family and friends to never let them down and that gesture n attitude took me to the place where I stand today. I shared how much a smile can create a difference in someone’s life and you being a reason for it would make people fall in love with you at first sight. I shared my life with them which I never did before in a public speaking session.

All applauded me for I don’t know what I said. I was their HERO for that day. Their role model. Someone who they could look up to when they wanted to get inspiration. Someone to think about during the times when life just offers failures and nothing else. I was that motivation for them and I hope i did justice to that :)

I have no words to describe the feeling of connecting myself with those kids from Saiful goth who have a long way to go in their lives. I just pray the best for them and I shall keep enlightening kids like them all around to have a better approach towards life.

Spread the love! The world needs it.

Sold car for Shoes!

Posted on 05 February 2012 by Tea Server

My friends and people who know me are well aware that I am very careless, carefree and lazy as far as my own self is considered. Always happy with what I have. I remember Dr. Mehnaz Munir the first administrator of HPS used to set my dupatta or button my sweater without any ill feeling while talking or asking me to do something. So it was but understood that one has to correct and iron out my shortcomings. I never felt belittled, rather felt elated when my friends and well wishers checked me or scolded me for my carelessness with the pure feeling that there’s some one who caresJ Mrs. Mumtaz Shafique was always  concerned about me and my well being just like a real sister. My heart felt cordial regards for all my colleagues, seniors, friends, those who served us in home or at work n above all my students and children. Caring and sharing gives energy and the sensation of being wanted.

I was nominated to representPakistanin SAARC Teachers Conference inNepalin early 90s from Hamdard.

I mostly wore saris for I felt on duty when wearing a sari. Moreover a sari is the only dress I assume in the whole wide world that no matter how old it is, it looks as good as new. The reason is simple. It is a long piece of cloth without any size or shape. The size of blouse changes accordingly. As I had a good collection of saris so never felt need of making many Pakistani national dresses. But I wanted to wear my national dress inNepalbeing the representative of my country. So I made few new suits. New shoes were needed too. I didn’t have money to waste on shoes as ENGLISH BOOT HOUSE is expensive. So sold out my car to buy shoesJ I bought sandals for 600 rupees.

But the interesting part is that when I wore the new sandals to attend meeting at Prime Minister of Nepal’s house, the sandals pinched my ankles.

I prefer comfort to fashion so dropped the idea of wearing new sandals. I bought slippers from outside our residence for only 60 Pakistani rupees and attended the meeting wearing those slippers. I was impressed with PM Man Mohan Adhikari’s simplicity and modesty. He ate with us talked to us just like a human being with no attitude or complex. While he was writing in my diary I told him: “Sir, you are so polite simple n kind that you don’t look like PM” At this frank and straight remark he said with a big smile:

“I am also like you, I respect Hakim Said for he is also very simple and modest, please give him my regards”

When I came back and went to school the other day. Some one had told Mrs.Aziz that I sold my car just to buy shoes so she tenderly scolded me. She said I could have asked her for money. But I am like this—- a silly crazy and carefree——-!

My dear children my message for you all is a human being is more valuable than anything. Costly outfits, jewelry, status, pomp and show are worthless.  A man like Hakim Said, Man Mohan Adhikari’s and many other God fearing people led simple honest life servicing humanity without any prejudice. May we all follow the footsteps of them. Amen

The Witty Mr. Jinnah

Posted on 05 February 2012 by Tea Server

I remember my Pakistan Studies Teacher relating an incident . Gandhi was addressing a press conference when a snake crawled out of somewhere and passed the leader without biting him. The next day the incident made it to the papers. Later at another press conference this time addressed by Jinnah the journalists asked him what he thought of this miracle. Even a snake would not dare touch Gandhi. ‘Professional ethics’ remarked Jinnah. I do not know whether this story is true or not but it left a mark on me.

It’s a national habit of ours to make our leaders, one dimensional. They become austere portraits hanging over bureaucrats bent over files, lifeless over judges and on the currency notes thumbed repeatedly, their features blurring with use. These men on our paper money who changed the course of history; do we ever wonder what they ate, how they lived and loved.

It was a delight to find out Muhammad Ali Jinnah loved spaghetti, and enjoyed eating grapes and plums. That he had a love of newspapers, had these ordered from all over the world, cut out pieces, wrote notes on them and stuck them in files. He enjoyed reading Kamal Ata Turk’s biography , ‘Grey Wolf’ and was later nicknamed the same by his daughter Dina.

Stanley Wolpert’s Jinnah of Pakistan was a good book to start from. The book goes into great detail about Jinnah’s marriage to Ruttie; Jinnah catching Dinshaw Petit off guard, inquiring his opinion about inter-communal marriages and getting a positive response from Petit, asking for his daughter’s hand in marriage. The book stirred controversy with passages of Ruttie bringing Jinnah bacon sandwiches and refuting the whole episode of Jinnah seeing the Prophet’s (p.b.u.h) name listed as one of the Great Law Makers of the World in Lincoln’s Inn. Nonetheless, Jinnah with all his flaws appears enigmatic.

Interestingly a recent programme on Dawn News confirmed the presence of a plaque, with the Prophet’s (p.b.u.h) name on a list of the Great Law Makers of the World, by showing it on television, though it is no more displayed.

There are a number of books that let us into Jinnah’s private world. A book by by Saleem Chaudry called Quaid-e-azam: baimisaal shakhsiyat, Daraakhshan kirdaar ki Jhalkiyaan is an excellent read. It is full of extracts, personal observations and anecdotes. Jinnah might appear haughty but his wit crackles and amuses.

The book records an incident about him travelling on a train as the reason for reserving a whole coupe for travelling alone. Once when he was travelling to attend the National Assembly from Bombay to Delhi on a first class ticket, he found himself alone in the compartment. From a station an Anglo Indian woman got on the train. She sat down silently on the seat opposite him. The train started moving. Jinnah lay on his seat reading something when he heard her saying, ‘Give me a thousand rupees or I will pull the chain and defame you.’’ Jinnah kept silent.

He gave her the impression that he had not heard her talking. The woman repeatedly demanded the same thing over and over again. Jinnah knew the next station was still some distance away. Angrily the woman came close to him, and violently shook his arm saying. ‘Cant you hear anything? Why are you not listening to me? Aren’t you worried about getting disgraced?’ Jinnah relates, that by this time he had thought of a way of getting out of this sticky situation. Without saying anything, using signs and gestures he got it through to her that he could not hear anything. He pushed a pen and paper towards her to write whatever she wanted to say to him. When she had written down what she was saying on the piece of paper Jinnah took the paper and pulled the chain. Immediately the Guard entered the compartment and Jinnah handed him the paper. The woman was arrested and the train resumed its journey. This incident made him extra cautious and he decided to always book the entire compartment.

A man labelled ‘cold’, ‘stubborn’, ‘arrogant ‘or even an ‘average lawyer who was a late achiever in life.’(Nehru). I find him brutally honest, witty and hard to pin down. How else could you describe a man who could snap at a Governor’s wife (Lady Willingdon as recorded by Hector Bolitho) when she suggested his pretty wife cover her bare shoulders with a wrap to prevent herself from getting a cold?

My favourite passages of Saleem’s book are ones that take the reader into the courtroom where Jinnah played the main lead. The man who had once dreamt of playing Romeo at the Theatre commanded rapt audience in real life courtrooms.

Jinnah had stopped practicing law by 1944 but a request by a Muslim inspector forced him to take his case. The case dealt with the issues of divorce and iddat and required Jinnah to explain about the Muslim Lunar Calendar to the judge. The Judge asked Jinnah about the moon, ‘if it does not rise?’ Jinnah replied, ‘then I cannot make it rise, my Lord.’

In another case when a Judge inquired about a ruling Jinnah was referring to during the proceedings, saying he had not seen such a ruling. Jinnah was quick to answer, ‘Mr. Jinnah says so.’

What baffled me while reading these incidents was if it was audacity to the point of recklessness? For example during the proceedings of a case, an English magistrate, bored and tired of the long discourse interrupted Jinnah in a sarcastic tone, ‘Mr. Jinnah I just listen to what you say from one ear and let it fly out the other’. Jinnah’s retort, the place between the magistrates’ ears must be empty if whatever he says goes in one end and flies out the other, makes me laugh in awe.

I think I am charmed by Jinnah like Sarojini Naidu, a prominent Indian Leader also known as the Nightingale of the East. Some sources claim her to have been besotted by Jinnah, with her writing love poems for him. A profile picture of her sitting in the National archives sent to Jinnah is signed ‘from your friend’ and there are many who deny the infatuation. Jinnah has that power. There is nothing average about him and nothing one dimensional about him.

Tell me sweet little lies

Posted on 05 February 2012 by Tea Server

I thought I knew Pakistan but when I said as much she onlylaughed
and pointed at me with her rough, ugly fingers capped with filthy blackenednails
that spoke of a lifetime of scrubbing people’s toilets and washing their dirtyunderwear
and laughed and laughed
and in her cackling, vile laughter, I heard mockery and disgust and delight
but most of all just simple, plain pity.
What do you know about Pakistan?she wanted to know.
You, with your feet propped up on the sofa
asking your servants to fetch you a glass of water,
thinking that all Pakistan really consists of is Islamabad,Karachi and Lahore
just because those are the only places in all of this godforsaken country youever known, ever truly seen
and what do you know with your three cars and Stylo shoes,
and cupboards of shalwar kameezes made by tailors to yourspecific design.
Tailors who sit in dingy little shops batting away flies,
sweat trailing downtheir necks
and coating their bodies in an unbroken layer of grease
as the sun smiles wickedly down on them above and radiates a light so bright
that the whole fucking world can see the good from the bad,
the real Pakistanis and the ones who’re just kiddingthemselves…

And when the lights on a traffic signal switches to green,
when have you ever really listened to the rapping of insistent knuckles againstthe windowpanes of your car
as a beggar-child wilting before you like a flower that’s seen too much cruelsun and too little fragrant water,
strives to be heard
Rescue me.
Rescue me.

What have you ever done except ignore him

and curse at the sun-burnt boy lifting up a muddy wiper to swipe across your car screen
just so that he doesn’t have to feel like a total piece of shit
as he splays hishands open before you for charity.
Is a little mud going to destroy your car?
Is a little dirt going to rape your chastity?
And as the moon sets on Pakistan,
you lift your cup of chai to your smooth, Vaseline-protectedlips
dip a Tuk biscuit into it just for taste
and tell yourself this country is yours, yours for the taking, yours for thecalling…

And you don’t see.
You don’t see that the moon is weeping,

you don’t see that the liquid falling and drumming on therooftops like steady, rhythmic music
Isn’t actually rain.
but tears
sacred tears
tears from the moon
tears of the Karakoram and the Himalayas and the trees
and yes, even the wicked sun
which turns out not to be that wicked after all, or at least less wicked thanyou
tears from the women eight months pregnant, their bellies straining
as they bend before you, crouching on all fours,
so they can rub lotions onto the soles of your feet, press your legs.
But who is there to press their legs when they get home?
Who is there to feed them tender mouthfuls of halwa puri and sticky rings ofsyrupy jalebi or soft, steaming platters of colourful goat biryani?

And when the dust settles and you meet your Maker,
He won’t give a fuck about how many times you thumbed your prayer beads lyingneatly on the table beside your bed
or just how many times you mouthed the words Allah-o-Akbar
no, He won’t give a fuck
no, He won’t
and He won’t give a fuck about whether you read the five prayers everyday ornot either, because He’ll know that the first thing you did after rolling thepayer mat –
was to go out and stick your tongue down your boyfriend’s throat.
No, all He’s going to ask is,
why did you spend six thousand rupees on concerts while children fainted in thestreets?
and why did you spend hours looking for that perfect shade of deep plum lace tomatch the pale mauve of your kameez
while mothers wept brokenly
raising their bony arms to the heavens for sustenance because they could feeltheir babies shriveling inside their wombs
dying before they even had a chance to live,
before their lungs even met air,
and their tongues found the cloying sweetness of a mother’s breast.

But I’m gone, I’m pushing away wildly, barreling in all directions,
Like a sheep lost from its herd, an injured bird, or a taxi driver who’sconsumed one to many brownies loaded with pot -
I don’t want to hear anymore.
I don’t want to hear any of it anymore.
I don’t want to hear anything anymore.
Because I’m tired of knives of guilt sinking into me
piecing through soft, malleable skin
crushing bones that turn out to be more fragile than expected,

…and I’ve learned to fear words.
Because they can cut through me like icicles,
spreading coldness and numbness through my bones,
freezing the very blood that runs through my veins
scarlet liquid turning to crimson solid, to granite stone
and I’m tired of drowning in tears shed by others,
of tasting the saltiness of their regrets.
If I could collect every drop of sweat ever shed by alaborer
I’d have the stuff of monarchs,
maybe even enough glittering sweat droplets to outnumber stars and galaxies
and if I could lay each drop side by side
like dew lying precariously perched on blades of green, green grass
why then, I could almost reach Pluto.
Oh, there are so many ways to be rich!
green papers notes are the not only things that constitute wealth…
If I could count the number of times you’ve told me you loved me
and ultimately not have enough joints on my fingers to match the tempo of thecount
I’d be richer than Saudi Arabian oil sheikhs and more powerful than fuckingObama himself.
So tell me that you love me.
Tell me that you love me.
Tell me that you love me.
Even if they’re only sweet little lies.

And tell me that if I give zakat
and in the evening spend thrice that amount throwing myself a birthday party inSerena,
I’m still a beautiful person.
Tell me that even if it’s only a sweet little lie.

And tell me that if I give all my old clothes to my cook’sdaughter,
just so I can have an excuse to buy myself twice more
(and of the latest fashions too),
I’m still an incredibly selfless person.
Tell me that.
Even if all it is, is a sweet little lie.
And tell me that if I hoist flags on my terraces
and string lines of jhandis across the brick walls of my house
and watch them flutter in the breeze
and burn sparklers on 14th August
but rig my electricity lines to my neighbour’s connection
and toss my tax bills down the gutter,
I’m still a good Pakistani.
And if I fast during Ramadhan
and have a knife plunged into the belly of a goat on Eid-ul-Adha
but allow the sons of my parent’s friends to fondle me
in the backseats of Lianas and Honda Civics,
I’m still a good Muslim.
Tell me all that.
Even if they’re only sweet fucking lies.
And I’ll love you forever.

An achievement a day!

Posted on 01 February 2012 by Tea Server

Been ages since I wrote something for myself. For my own satisfaction and pleasure. Feels so good to look back at few blog posts and the immense amount of love you guys have shown towards reading them :)

Alhamdulillah it was a good day today. Not a good start of the day because of my mama’s illness but when I had reached office, I could see quite a few happenings around me that made me open my blog yet again and start off this regular blogpost “An achievement a day”. Let me tell you what is going to be about.

Everyday we spend quite a few hours working, studying, helping, co-operating, winning, losing, crying etc. Nonetheless its a part of our everyday routine to do something or the other to make our selves feel better. Be it listening to music or chatting with a friend over phone. Be it playing your favorite game or be it looking at the picture of your sweetheart and letting her know how much you love her. Be it making fun of people randomly or be it reading something amusing. Each of us seeks peace and contentment in lives. Which is absolutely OKAY!

Now what I believe is the fact that everyone is an achiever in some or the other manner. I am an achiever because I made my dream come true of being an RJ. You may be an achiever because you scored straight As in your class. But are achievements limited to all the BIG things in life? I don’t think so.

An achievement can be as small as finishing the food on your plate. An achievement can be saving 10 rupees out of your pocket money at the end of the day. An achievement could be getting ready in time for school. An achievement is as simple as making someone smile :)

So from today onwards, I shall be posting my everyday’s achievements and see if you guys can share your achievements with me. Life is all about these crazy little things that make us happy my friends. We just need the eyes to look at them :)

Blessings and love!
