To be, but what to be?

Posted on 18 January 2012 by Tea Server

We remember the time when most of Pakistani parents would aspire to be parents of future doctors, engineers and military personnel. The second choice would be opportunities afforded by CSS. The age of computers came and it added another option but never with the allure of the above. Those originally sought after professions still remain the aspiration for millions and their parents.

Being an engineer, and an only son to two doctors, I am part of a family apparently counted the first two choices as the only reasonable choices. And similarly, I am convinced that while liberal arts, journalism, economics, pure sciences and other professions are more acceptable now than ever before, the core choice of most Pakistani parent has not changed much.

This attitude and the limitations of our educational system has posed a number of dilemmas for individuals and created social problems and challenges for the Pakistani society. I have always tried to convince people who think of working without going through formal higher education to reconsider, but privately I have my doubts about the utility of this advice. And these doubts arise from a major stress factor that threatens our society today, unemployment of the highly educated. Doctors and engineers included.

Being an Engineer I would venture to share my opinion on what ails this professional qualification. Our engineering universities, except for the top few, have turned into mass producers of degree holding individuals who have little chance of securing a decent job at the initial stages. And while lack of jobs can also be attributed to the present economic conditions it’s also a result of not understanding the significance of the numbers that our economy can absorb, even in better days.

Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of engineering institutes in the country, Private Sector and Government Sector. The Government Sector includes universities such as the UETs (Lahore, Peshawar, Taxila, Faisalabad, Mehran), Punjab University, NED Karachi, Bahauddin Zakaria University and many more. The Private sector, which has noticeably ballooned in the recent past, includes GIKI, NUST, FAST, LUMS, University of Central Punjab, University of Lahore etc. Four of the biggest engineering institutions of the country, UET Lahore, GIKI, NUST, and NED are the most prestigious. UET produces around 1400 Engineers (BSc) every year. NUST and NED can be estimated to produce a similar number and GIKI churns out about 500.

This takes the outflow of these four institutions to be around 4700. Let’s assume that all of the other institutions produce around 10,000 professionals on top of these and this takes the number to around 15,000, minimum, every year. The next question is what do they do after they have graduated and the problem begins at this very moment. The end of graduation divides these young individuals into two broad spectrums,

1. Those who want to work in the industry

2. Those who want to seek further education

It is important to mention that this division is affected by the economic strata to which these engineers belong to. Those from relatively better economic background choosing to study further. Most of those wanting to serve in the industry immediately after graduating would be those who are in some way economically challenged. And then within these Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical engineers have the best chances of securing a decent first job. And for the other graduates in less desired Engineering fields it’s a real dog fight. This poses the first dilemma.

To further complicate matters or the engineering trades that are called traditional, e.g. Electrical and Mechanical, while there are jobs but the competition is extremely tough. For the nontraditional trades such as Environmental Engineering and Metallurgy, there are not many jobs to begin with. This leads to a very healthy situation. As the top spots fill out engineers begin to settle for lesser and lesser than they aimed until most of them would start off with jobs that are only remotely linked with what they have been trained for. But even after such compromises there would always be a huge number of Engineering graduates left unemployed.

It’s a never ending sad story. The number of engineers our institutions are producing grows each year with fewer jobs to compete for. This situation is likely to continue till the present economic recession remains and the security situation does not improve. Add to all this the cost cutting measures that even industrial giants are taking today and we have a very dire challenge facing us.

So what are we left with?

We are left with thousands of individual graduates, unemployed or barely employed with no silver lining in their dark skies. They have run out of ideas and plans and with an aim of surviving only. One would have thought, or wished, that our government would somehow come up with policies to tackle this challenge. How very naïve of us to think like this !!

Every year, our government grants more and more institutions the right to grant engineering degrees. I cannot claim that these universities are not assessed for infrastructure and other prerequisites, but I have witnessed 5 room “universities” claiming of awarding “Engineering” degrees. The fact that despite the huge increase in the number of engineering institutions today each one of them is full to its brim is a proof that even today most young people automatically choose this profession to study without assessing the future prospects.

Year after year we put on the line the future of some of our brightest minds by not planning properly, as a state our educational policies. These individuals have the potential of making a huge difference if they are guided properly at the beginning of the higher education stage.

Its high time that the government and the political parties focus on correcting our educational policies. In this information age Human Resources are a countries most important asset. We cannot afford, as a state and society, to treat it in such a callous manner.

The cry of domestic rampage

The womb of a mother that nurtures and protects a baby before coming in this world, the better half that carries the half burden of husband’s life, the beloved women who offers her shoulder in times of sadness, the delicate and tender hands of a sister that manages the house in absence of a mother. Faces keep changing in life but the gender remains the same. Yes, its a woman!

The kind heart in a soft body best defines a woman and some people take advantage of this quality. Being the weaker sex, woman faces a lot of difficulties and misfortunes in her life from childhood to maturity. In childhood, she is unaware of the unnecessary touching of choori wala, ice-cream wala or dukan wala and in mature age, she is aware of everything but can’t do anything. A number of bills against women harassment and violence have been passed in the past, but a rural woman. a victim of domestic violence is still fighting for life and freedom.

According to the website www.humanillnesses.com,

“Violence is the use of physical force to injure people or property. Violence may cause physical pain to those who experience it directly, as well as emotional distress to those who either experience or witness it.”

The definition of women violence is not much different to that of the actual definition of violence. The only difference is that weaker sex mostly experiences the harsh actions due to the unaware and illiterate behavior of stronger sex that is man.

The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (1993) states that

“violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have led to domination over and discrimination against women by men and to the prevention of the full advancement of women, and that violence against women is one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into a subordinate position compared with men.

Violence against women include: domestic violence, physical abuse, sexual abuse and rape in intimate relationships; psychological and emotional abuse, femicid, sexual abuse of children and adolescent, forced prostitution and sex-selective abortions.

While discussing women violence, domestic violence over women should be highlighted and given a wider space. Violence starts from home. It may be by parents, husband or another woman. It’s true a woman is mostly alleged of doing violence over another woman. She may be present in the face of sister-in-law or mother-in-law or any other lady. Women usually experience domestic violence over dowry issues, jealousy issues or other house hold problems. But now, the violence has taken a new turn, as black magic is also involved in it. The women with shaky believes usually go to the babas to get rid of other women. Another major reason of violence is having a girl in womb. The discrimination of girl and boy is destroying our society and a number of women have been burnt or strangled to death for giving birth to a girl.

Mostly husbands consider their right to abuse or beat up wives so that the wife can’t dominate. Such illiterate views ruin their married life. Their kids also suffer the consequences and creates a negative impact on their minds. According to the study of PhD student Naima Hassan, the Applied Psychology Department of the Punjab University,

“Most husbands consider abusing or even beating up wives their right many justifying the abuse by arguing that their wives do not hold their in-laws in esteem or lack warmth in lovemaking”

Domestic abuse, also known as spousal abuse, occurs when one person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. Domestic abuse that includes physical violence is called domestic violence with reference to Ansar Burney Trust,

“According to estimates – as many as 70 percent of women in Pakistan experience domestic violence. This violence can range from beatings, to sexual violence or torture, to broken bones and very serious injury caused by pouring of acid or burning the victim alive.”

Domestic violence can be very brutal and lethal. A woman should take an action at an early step before it’s too late. She can inform her parents and if it doesn’t work out then she can get help and support from women NGOS working in Pakistan. A number of bills have also been passed by the National Assembly in order to save women from the horrible violence. The only drawback is that the brutal assailant is later released on bail. Women do protest against the bail out of such men, but it is the men who eventually dominate the society.
Knowledge is power. Only education can change the present scenario.

According to Hazrat Ali (A.S),

“Knowledge and practice are twins, and both go together. There is no knowledge without practice, and no practice without knowledge.”

Seek knowledge, spread knowledge and kindly use knowledge in taking your decision in the light, because knowledge will never let you down.

Lazy Liberals: Look Busy, Do Nothing!

Posted on 04 December 2011 by Tea Server

For a while now the liberals keepsaying that they are standing up and waging a great struggle against those whoare constantly attacking them and their beliefs. Around social media and evenmain stream media, the liberals are talking, making a lot of noise with regardsto presenting how they are being attacked and consistently marginalized. Buthere is the problem, apart from shouting and crying foul play, the liberals inPakistan have yet to do anything else.

In any society there are alwaysliberals, conservatives, libertarians and what not. It is not like we arespecial in some way that only we have the liberals who are the self claimedbattered minority in an increasingly hostile environment. The point of thiswhole discussion is not to bash liberals; it is in fact to call out theliberals to actually do something instead of just making noise. The whole purpose of this piece is to actually get liberals to do something, become politically involved, organize themselves in groups and become a viable opposition to the many rightist groups in Pakistan.

Starting out the most commonphrase liberals keep using is, they are against us and they attack us. Definewho THEY are. I mean if it is the conservatives or the religious right oraliens or people who just do not like you. Who are THEY exactly? I ask thisquestion because in order for any of us to have a proper dialogue, we need toat least know what the two sides are. So an answer to this question would be agreat start.

Massive JUI-F Rally in Karachi. Over 200,000 people showed up.

Secondly, assuming that thelogical opposite of liberals is conservatives and in terms of Pakistan thatbeing the religious right, what are the liberals actually doing. Because seethe religious parties are organized, and by that I mean, if they call out theirsupporters they can assemble thousands in a matter of hours. In case you wantan example, Jamaat-e-Islami’s annual show of power at Punjab University is asight worth watching. More importantly the discipline they have is exemplary. So in contrast to that, what have the liberals done so far? I mean I realizethat they keep repeating that they are more of an ideological group and the PPPis the only party that even remotely close to their ideas. But thing is,Conservatives are also an ideology, and yet they actually did something andformed various groups and parties who now exert influence regionally if notnationally. So while the liberals might have sympathies towards a politicalparty, they do not have their own party or even an organized group on the scaleof their apparent ideological rivals.

Thirdly, I know it is awesome andpretty cool to write a million articles and make 100s of movies about howPakistan is super conservative but that kind of does absolutely nothing toactually address the problem. I know the argument to that might be it at leastraises awareness among people, to that I ask you what people? Because thepeople you would like to raise awareness among do not read or see most of yourstuff because it is totally beyond their reach or at times understanding. Sowhile you are doing whatever you are doing, and congratulating each other oversuper brilliant stuff you might have written and your buddies have read, theoverall impact is next to nothing. Also while we are at it, the term liberalshave somehow become synonymous with being elitist or rich or even pro-western.Which to be honest is not right, as liberalism means a lot more. But ourliberals have managed to stay in their comfy cocoon and cement this reputationinstead of taking it head on.

Falah-e-Insaniyat Trust, a group that is rebranding of Jamaat-ud Dawa
doing relief work in Rural Sindh

Moreover, the point is ourliberals tend to make statements and say touchy feely stuff instead of doingjack shit. Instead of being constantly bashed by everyone else, why haven’t ourliberals actually engaged the other side in a debate? I am sorry but sayingthat they have guns and they are not willing to listen to logic is bullshit.Thing is the sort of logic and language our liberals are going on about is noteven on the same page as most of the country let alone the other side. If youwant to genuinely have a discussion and debate over something logical you willhave to start playing at the same level as your opponents and critics. But thisis apparently something that is beyond the understanding of our liberals, because this would require genuine effort and work, instead they are too lazyfor that. They just enjoy sitting in upscale neighborhoods and cities whileaddressing the issues of the common man. It just can’t work like that. Thebasic minimum that needs to be done is at least speak the same language as youropponents. Also it would kind of help, if our liberals stopped being cry babiesand perpetual victims.

Our liberals cannot continuedoing what they have been so far i.e. making noise and writing about makingthat noise, taking small victories and exaggerating them in to epic wins. Thatcannot continue, because they just cement the public’s perception of them beinga group of over educated pro western elitists. Point is, if the liberals want therespect the religious parties and conservative groups get, well startperforming at the same level. Stop exaggerating small tiny simplistic every daythings in to epic achievements. Because fact is, if you want to go head to headwith any social conservative group in the field of social work, you do notstand a chance. So play to your strengths or better yet start playing ratherthan complaining about your unfulfilled dream of playing. The scale of liberal groups needs to improve while also the sphere in which they function. They cannot keep competing as an ideology against something that is an ideology as well as well oiled machine.
