Selecting A Cloud Computing Model

Posted on 13 February 2012 by Tea Server

There are two common delivery models in cloud computing  IaaS and PaaS. They offer users different levels of control to provide software and hardware services on-demand from a remote host.

Cloud Computing Model Selecting A Cloud Computing Model

Automation That Saves Time

Platform as a Service (PaaS) has great benefits for software developers. Clients receive the tools and services necessary for coding and deploying applications without purchasing and maintaining software and infrastructure. It allows the creation of software utilizing proprietary data from applications. Clients can also use PaaS to create applications with common data form. It is good for people with existing data sources, such as customer accounts, and create applications for data use. It can also automate testing and deploying of services. PaaS is not good where applications need higher portability or when proprietary languages have an influence on the development process.

Efficiency With Low Costs

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) delivers the hardware and software to power servers, storage, networks and operating systems as on-demand services. IaaS is offered as either public or private infrastructure. Public is outsources as shared resources on a self service basis over the Internet. While private has the characteristic virtualizations but does so on a private network. Clients receive resources, dynamic scaling with the ability to accommodate multiple users on a single piece of hardware.

IaaS benefits clients if their demand for infrastructure is not steady or if companies don’t have financial resources for scaling hardware. Regulatory compliance make the outsourcing of data storage and processing difficult for most users of IaaS. They are also disadvantaged if a company needs a high level of performance with its own infrastructure.

Do Check: Cloud Storage and Cloud Computing

Practical Use

One example of successful PaaS user is Menumate. They are an Australian point of sale as we as a  hardware and software provider. They use PaaS for their legacy applications. They were able to centralize and integrate a somewhat outdated in-house software toolkit by adopting PaaS. The service provided them non-functional requirements of significant infrastructure, connectivity and security so they could develop more functionality. They were also able to take advantage of existing integrations and automated deployment tools that PaaS offered them during the development process. Some of the legacy applications they migrated where licensure key generation, enhanced case management and label pricing. Using Paas development environment increased the speed of application creation. Without the service the process would have been costly.

Do Check: Cloud Computing Trends 2012

Live Smart is a producer of books and online diet programs. They operate the interactive online community Beyond Diet for their program users. In 2008, their site averaged visits of 300,000 viewers per day with spikes of up to 1,000,000 users a day. They needed an infrastructure that was low-touch and highly scalable to handle spikes. IaaS gave them the correct solutions for their marketing strategy. IaaS acts as their Linux and Windows administrator. They made changes as needed and responded to downtime. The service gives them the ability to focus on their core business. Their final decision to stay with the service has reduced the cost and increased flexibility compared to dedicated servers.

To sum up, control is the major difference between the two services. PaaS offers no control for the user with most implementation and control of applications handled through PaaS vendors. While Iaas users have total control but need a stronger technical team to handle the responsibilities of maintenance and security.

WordPress Plugins that Power Digital Inspiration

Posted on 08 February 2012 by Tea Server

WordPress PluginsAs some of you may know, this tech blog and my personal blog are both powered by WordPress software. What follows is a complete list of WordPress plugins that work behind the scenes to add new functionality to these sites that’s otherwise not available in the vanilla version of WordPress.org.

These are all free and open-source plugins and you can find them in the WordPress plugin repository.

The Best WordPress Plugins for your Website

1. Search Regex – This adds extremely powerful search and replace capabilities to your blog. You can find and replace almost any kind of data stored on your WordPress site including post titles, excerpts, comments, and meta data. It even supports regular expressions.

2. Redirection – If the URL of an existing post has changed or if an external site is linking to a non-existent page on my site, I can create redirection rules and automatically forward all the incoming traffic to the right pages.

3. Bing 404 – If someone lands on a 404 page for which redirection is not yet enabled, this plug-in will display links to relevant article on the error page. For example, a 404 page like labnol.org/googledocs will have links to my Google Docs articles.

4. WordPress SEO – This is probably the only SEO plugin you need for your WordPress blog. It helps you create better titles, you can block duplicate pages (like archive pages) from search bots, and it also adds the necessary meta tags required for more search-friendly Google snippets.

5. Hyper Cache – This is a caching plug-in for WordPress that will help reduce the load on your web server by saving pages as static HTML files. WP Total Cache is another popular caching plugin though I prefer Hyper Cache for its simplicity.

6. FB Open Graph – This plugin will insert the necessary Open Graph meta tags to your blog’s header so that you blog posts look good and have the right snippets when they are shared on Facebook or Google Plus.

7. 404 Email Notifier – This sends you an email notification as soon as a visitor lands on a 404 page on your WordPress website. The email messages have details about the visitor’s IP address, what browser they are using and the referral URL that led him to that broken link.

8. SlideShare – This helps you easily embed SlideShare presentations in blog posts with the help of short codes – see samples.

9. Smart YouTube – This lets you embed YouTube videos in blog posts using standing video URLs and the embedded player can be customized. It adds a thumbnail of the embedded video in the RSS feed and the same plug-in can also be used to embed videos from Facebook and Vimeo.

10. YARRP – The related posts plug-in adds links to old stories that may be contextually related to the content of the current story. It also helps expose your archived content to search bots.

11. WP Optimize – Use the WP Optimize plugin to clean-up your WordPress database tables. It can remove post revisions, trash spam comments and also optimize your MySQL tables so that it works more efficiently and also consumes less space.

12. WP-DBManager – This plugin will help you backup your WordPress database manually or you can set up a scheduled job for automatic backup and the database files will be sent to your email address at set intervals. Advanced users can use WP-DBManager to run SQL queries against their WordPress database without the phpMyAdmin tool. There are other plugins that can save backups to Amazon S3 and Dropbox.

13. Debug Queries – Is your blog slow? Use the Debug Queries plugin plugin to determine which MySQL queries are taking more time to execute and thus slowing down the blog. Debug Bar is another related plugin org that shows PHP warnings, queries and other helpful debugging information in the WordPress admin bar.

14. Auto Post Thumbnail – WordPress added support for Post Thumbnail Images in WordPress 2.9 but if you have been using WordPress for long, thumbnails may not be associated with your old posts. Use the Auto Post thumbnail plugin to automatically generate thumbnails for such posts using the first image found in the post content.

15. Regenerate Thumbnails – When you change the default size (height and width) of post thumbnails (or featured images) on your blog, you can use this plugin to regenerate thumbnails with the new dimensions.

16. Google XML Sitemaps – Since you want Google and other search engines to know about each and every page of your WordPress website, you need an XML sitemap and this plug-in lets you generate one in a click.

17. XML Video Sitemap – The plugin generates an XML Sitemap for your WordPress blog with all the YouTube videos that are embedded in your blog posts. I am also using XML Sitemap for Images and XML Sitemap for Mobile.

18. Date in a Nice Tone – This plugin offers an alternate way to display dates in your blog posts. It displays the amount of time – like “a few days ago,” or “in the last month,” or “over a year ago” – that has passed since a post or page was published.

19. SyntaxHighlighter Evolved – If you regularly embed code snippets in your WordPress blog posts, this plugin will help you highlight the syntax of the source code in different colors for more comfortable reading. Supports all popular programming languages.

20. Pubsubhubbub – This will help you beat content scrapers using Fat Pings. When you publish a blog post, it will instantly ping Google and that is a strong signal to the search engine that you are the original author.

21. WP-Associatizer – This plug-in will automatically rewrite any Amazon URLs in your posts to use your Amazon Associates ID.

22. Template Tag SC – WordPress offers numerous template tags – like wp_list_pages() or wp_tag_cloud() – that you can use in your theme files. The plugin will help you insert the sam template tags directly in your blog posts or pages using Short Codes.

23. Login Logger – This plugin logs the IP address and the exact date & time when a user logs into your WordPress dashboard. It also keeps track of any unsuccessful login attempts. Use this plugin in combination with Limit Login Attempts to automatically lock out users after they have made ‘n’ unsuccessful login attempts.

24. CF Shortcode – This helps you insert custom fields inside your WordPress posts using the visual editor. This comes extremely handy when you want to add custom JavaScript inside your WordPress posts.

25. Advanced Excerpt – The post excerpts in WordPress are fixed at 55 words and often displayed with [...] ellipsis at the end. This plugin lets you to specify a custom length of excerpts, you can get rid of the ellipsis and the excerpts can be configured to have full sentences so that there are no weird cuts.

WordPress Plugins – Retired but Useful

The first version of this list was published in 2010 and since then, I have removed or deactivated a few WordPress plugins. Here’s why:

1. WordPress.com Stats – I am using Google Analytics to track site stats and therefore it doesn’t make sense to have another tracking program for the same goal.

2. Akismet – The comments on this site are powered by Disqus and they seem to offer decent spam protection on their own.

3. WordPress PDA – This plugin helped serve the mobile version of this site based on their browser’s user agent. Digital Inspiration now uses a responsive design and thus the same site is served to both desktop and mobile users.

4. WP-Paginate – The paginate plugin provide better navigation and also helps search engines find and crawl deep content on your site. The new design of this site has pagination built-in and therefore this plugin is no longer necessary.

Download Firefox 10 from Mozilla FTP Servers

Posted on 31 January 2012 by Tea Server

Firefox 10

The official release of Firefox 10 may just be a couple of hours away but if you can’t wait, the new Firefox 10.0 installers are now available for download on Mozilla’s FTP servers.

Here’re the direct links to download Firefox 10.

For Windows (15.1 MB):

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/10.0/win32/en-US/Firefox%20Setup%2010.0.exe

For Mac (31.4 MB):

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/10.0/mac/en-US/Firefox%2010.0.dmg

For Linux (18 MB):

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/10.0/linux-x86_64/en-US/firefox-10.0.tar.bz2

The above links point to the English (US) version of Firefox 10.0 but if you looking to download Firefox in a different language, either change the “en-US” string in the URL to your own locale code or use traverse the FTP directory manually starting with ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/10.0/.

Firefox 9 is a memory hog (at least on my Windows machine) and that’s one area where Mozilla needs to work really hard. Let’s see if things have improved with version 10.0.

Tech

Posted on 28 January 2012 by Tea Server

I’m a big fan of technology. I do things with technology sometimes which are of no practical benefit to me, but I do them because I’m curious. Because I can. I ran Linux on my iPod just because. I swapped the firmwares on a Korean wireless router with a tweaked Cisco firmware just for the heck of it. I try out new things not because I need them, but because I’m curious.

But sometimes I ask myself, how much is enough? I’m not even gonna bring up cell phones and personal technology – augmented reality, life-streams and the fusion of technology and daily life. But today, we have 3D printers. In 20 years, people will be able to order a pair of Nikes online and print them at home. You’d be able to print clothing, accessories, even spare-parts for the machines that are printing these for you. You’d be able to print your own breakfast. And chances are, you won’t even need a computer to do all these things.

Today, we have walking people with no pulse. People whos hearts have given in but technology hasn’t. They have blood running through their bodies – they breathe, they eat and sleep and go about their daily business as usual. But if you put your ears close to their chest, they have no heartbeat.

The iBookstore just announced electronic textbooks seeking to replace paper and binds. I’m writing this on an electronic machine when I’ve always wanted to own a typewriter. The connection – of man and anything derived of nature, is fading away.

I’m not saying that these are bad things to have, but certainly things to think about.

N9 Launch introduction to Bloggers!

Posted on 26 December 2011 by Tea Server

I wanted to write this post since 2 weeks now but hell I am a super lazy person :)

The other day I was invited as a blogger to come and witness the N9 launch in Sheraton Karachi by Mr. Henri Mattila, Solution Marketing Manager, Nokia MEA.

N9 the pricing set for N9 is  PKR. 52,000/- with 16GB and is now available in White color. The good part about colors is that now you don’t have to worry that much about scratches because even after the scratch the color will remain same as there is no paint job this time

Some of the key features for N9:

MeeGo OS v1.2 Harmattan – Linux based
Gorila Glass  Anti-glare polarizer they say this glass is used in fighter copters
Weight only 135 gm
BuiltIN NFC now this was really cool, touch other device which is NFC enabled and there you go its paired and Henri said its also cross platform enable meaning doesn’t matter if other device is not Nokia the nfc technology will still work

Over all, its a good phone and I think one should buy. Pictures and Press Release below:

Karachi – 12th December 2011: Nokia recently hosted an exclusive preview of the Nokia N9, built for people who appreciate a stunning blend of design and the latest smartphone technology. The event was held at a local hotel and gathered top-notch technology enthusiasts from across Pakistan.
The Nokia N9 introduces an innovative new design where the home key is replaced by a simple gesture: a swipe. Whenever you’re in an application, swiping from the edge of the display takes you home. The three home views of the user interface are designed to give fast access to the most important things people do with a phone: using apps, staying up to date with notifications and social networks, and switching between activities.
The industrial design of the Nokia N9 is an example of extreme product making and craft. The body is precision-machined from a single piece of polycarbonate and flows seamlessly into beautiful curved glass. The laminated deep black display means that the user interface just floats on the surface of the product.
“With the Nokia N9, we wanted to design a better way to use a phone. To do this we innovated in the design of the hardware and software together. We reinvented the home key with a simple gesture: a swipe from the edge of the screen. The experience sets a new bar for how natural technology can feel,” said Henri Mattila, Solution Marketing Manager, Middle East & Africa (MEA), Nokia. “And this is just the beginning. The details that make the Nokia N9 unique – the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers – will evolve in future Nokia products.”
The Nokia N9 also packs the latest in camera, navigation and audio technology for a great all-round experience. With no need for a home key, the all-screen Nokia N9 makes more room for apps to shine. The 3.9-inch AMOLED screen is made from scratch-resistant curved glass. The polycarbonate body enables superior antenna performance. This means better reception, better voice quality and fewer dropped calls.
The 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss autofocus sensor, wide-angle lens, HD-quality video capture and large lens aperture enable great camera performance even in lowlighting conditions. This makes the Nokia N9 one of the best camera-phones ever produced.
The Nokia N9 features free turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance in Maps. With the new dedicated Drive app, you can get in the car and start navigating to your destination right away when travelling abroad.
You can watch videos in true 16:9 widescreen format. And because the Nokia N9 is also the world’s first smartphone with Dolby® Digital Plus decoding and Dolby Headphone post-processing technology, you get a surround sound experience with any set of headphones.
Fitted with the latest in wireless technology, Near Field Communication (NFC), the Nokia N9 allows you to easily share images and videos between devices by touching them together. Pair it with Bluetooth accessories like the new NFC-enabled Nokia Play 360° wireless music speaker only once, and you get a great surround sound music experience with just a tap.
The Nokia N9 is available in three colors – black, cyan, and magenta with storage options to accommodate plenty of content: 16GB and 64GB. The Nokia N9 is available with Nokia distributors across Pakistan.
