Reviewing the LogMeIn app

Posted on 20 January 2012 by Tea Server

The coolest apps of all that I’ve discovered on the app store has to be the LogMeIn.com client for the iPhone. It basically allows you to access another computer in your LogMeIn account over the Internet by some insane technology, and you can use your computer directly from your phone! That’s ultra amazing, and I was totally blown away by the speed with which you can control your computer.

Here’s a snapshot of the website which says that the app is totally for free, and in this free version out can do just about everything like file sharing or direct computer control. The pro version gives other benefits, but I didn’t find any of them very top requirement material.

20120120-003419.jpg

In order for this to work, you need to have the free client installed on the computer as well. Once you’ve done that, you will be able to either browse the computer files entirely via your phone, or access the entire computer desktop. Here’s a couple of snaps from my computer folder structure which is very easy to navigate.

20120120-004215.jpg

The last picture shows how you can also retrieve files from your computer hard disk via the Internet over to your iPhone. Totally neat.

As for desktop sharing, the only limitation is the lack of a proper keyboard and a small iPhone screen, otherwise it’s pretty smooth if you want to work on your computer on the go.

20120120-004450.jpg

I was able to work normally and even work on my document files using the standard qwerty keyboard input.

Overall it’s an awesome application and highly recommended, especially if you don’t want to take all your hardware wherever you go. Good for me since I often gave to access data from remote locations, and with the added functionality of retrieving files and stuff this is a totally new definition of mobile computing.

Candy Pot does well on App stores worldwide

Posted on 18 January 2012 by Tea Server

Very often I am asked why I put so many hours into my work at P@SHA, why whenever I am on a visit to Lahore or Islamabad I try and meet as many people as I can. Admittedly, at the end of a long day trip, I am totally wiped out. So why is it worth it? Or is it worth it at all? I think it is and the reason for that is that in every corner of this country there is interesting work being done in technology – and I love being part of it. I love talking about it. I love cheering on each and every person and company in this space because of their passion, their technical competence and the image they project of a Pakistan that is so different from the one that is projected in Western media.

One such story is that of a young man I met some years ago. He was trying to put up the pretense of being a blogger but had hardly written any posts. He did some microblogging on Twitter and Facebook but generally he was busy tinkering around with Microsoft technology. Having graduated from NUCES-FAST Karachi, he had worked at several companies but the entrepreneurial bug bit him and he  was anxious to start his own venture and take it wherever it was destined to go.But one makes ones own destiny I am told. And Munir  and his partner Amirhave proven that this is indeed true.tart his own venture and take it wherever it was destined to go.They set up Pi Labs which is a company that truly believes in the power

of mobility. This team of young, energetic and dedicated bunch of engineers & designers have always been eager to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Their passion for mobile software and their ability to deliver engaging solutions has brought them much acclaim. Early adoption of Windows Phone 7 meant that they were one of the first companies globally to deliver an app to the Microsoft Marketplace although their expertise is not limited to Windows Phone 7. It encompasses all platforms including iOS, Android and Palm’s WebOS.

The latest in their stable of applications is Candy Pot, a simple yet addictive game. It is a new app available for the iPhone and the iPod touch. There are two versions of the game – a full version which consists of 45 levels and a lite version which comprises 15 levels. As soon as you start the app, you are introduced to the main character – TinTin.

The objective of the game is to somehow move a spherical candy to a candy pot by using the basic principles of physics. A few friends –  biscuit bars, cotton candies and ice pipes – can help with the task. Some of the candies are heavier or bouncier than others. Each type of object is introduced to you at a different level of the game.

Features include 3 delicious worlds, 45 challenges, 2 awesome candy balls, 5 different objects and hundreds of hints to help you get through! This promotional video is worth watching.

Candy Pot has certainly performed well since its launch on November 18th 2011.

  1. Immediately after launch it was ranked in the top 50 games in more than 17 countries including US, China and India in both Puzzle and Family Category .
  2. It was ranked at #1 position in the Pakistani App Store for several days in both the Puzzle and Family Games Category (Above Cut The Rope and Angry Birds)
  3. It was amongst the top 25 in China during the Christmas/New Year holidays in both the Puzzle and Family Games Category.
  4. Candy Pot was amongst the top 10 in India last month in both the Puzzle and Family Games Category

Well done boys! All of us who know you are absolutely certain that this is the beginning of many more interesting apps that will top all stores worldwide.

Reviewing some iPhone apps (and getting some thumb exercise)

Posted on 18 January 2012 by Tea Server

So I have been checking out some of the neat free apps on the app store and found some pretty delightful stuff, and along that journey of app-discovery I also stumbled upon some general iPhone usage tricks for multitasking and ease of use. Before I give details of the apps, here’s a snapshot of the orientation lock button which can be accessed by pressing the home button twice.

20120118-001836.jpg

This is particularly useful when you’re lying down on one side and don’t want to tilt your phone in an awkward position to use it. By the way, all these snapshots can be taken by pressing the home and lock buttons simultaneously (forgive me if I sound like a noob).

And as for the multitasking part, I never knew that the iPhone was capable of something like it till I felt a slowing down in overall usage. Googling my problem I found out that just pressing the home button doesn’t close an app, but the double tap home button shows which apps are running at the moment, which you can close off properly by doing a press hold over any app till the red minus sign comes up, at which point you can kill the unwanted apps by just pressing the minus sign.

20120118-002832.jpg

Some of the apps that I had been running before making the aforementioned discovery include some interested music composing apps, a few of them a pure visual and auditory treat. Soundprism is one app which lets you play (and record in the pro version) synthesised sounds on a kind of keyboard the keys for which you can press as a group by selecting the shape of the area that you need to use to press them. Sounds a bit confusing, and I haven’t got the hand of it yet, but just pressing those keys and listening to the soothing sounds is enough to keep you entertained on a lazy Sunday night.

20120118-003559.jpg

Another interesting app among many is the PatternMusic app which is exactly like the Koan X Platinum software I used on the PC a long time ago. Panning “instrument” icons over the space allows you to adjust their volume and panning, and you can configure each instruments tune and melody in a a separate interface. Again, you need to pay money to be able to save anything, and I am not sure if anyone would do so much work in this just to have their creations not saved.

20120118-004212.jpg

TurboViewer allows me to view wireframes of DWG files of almost any size with ease. Standard punch zoom and orbit operations can be done to review the wireframe models. I don’t see too much utility for this app, but with superior markup options thus would definitely be a must have for CAD managers and designers on the move.

20120118-004542.jpg

And then I tried out the WordFued app, which had me hooked for quite some time. Apart from the mildly annoying ads after every move you make, this is a neat app for casual multiplayer play, and definitely gives you a chance to exercise those neurone while you’re lounging on your couch.

20120118-004949.jpg

Finally, a snapshot from another cute app which serves a noble purpose; to put the sleepless ones to sleep. The monotonous snore of this little red guy floating on a cloud will definitely send anyone to where he is. A little nudge to his cloud moves him around the screen, and a more violent shake can disturb him, but he never wakes up!

20120118-005330.jpg

Should be enough app review for now. Just realised that my right thumbs aching after writing such a long post on a teeny weeny screen. Until next time.

5 iPhone Apps For Better Business Finances

Posted on 15 January 2012 by Tea Server

The diversity and sheer volume of iPhone apps is just one reason the Apple device is considered the most desirable smartphone on the market. The flexibility provided makes it ideal for personal and professional use, but it may surprise you that the iPhone is also a very capable tool for managing small business finances.

The wealth of accounting, finance, and bookkeeping apps offer small business owners the power to better manage their cash flow while creating new strategies to increase growth and efficiency. At times, however, the overabundance of options can make it difficult to sort out which apps are the most proficient when it comes to your specific accounting and financial needs.

4. Receipts

Small business owners are often required to keep detailed records of every purchase they make, as many seemingly personal transactions can fall into the realm of business. Rather than painstakingly going through your receipts and adding figures with a calculator, try utilizing the Receipts app for the iPhone. This app providers users with a way to enter in their business expenses and receipt information as they make their purchases, significantly ameliorating the burden of adding figures and sorting through crumpled pieces of paper come tax season.

iPad

Posted on 15 January 2012 by Tea Server

I own a Nokia E72 mobile phone. While I have not owned mobile phones longer than five years, I have in that time span been through two mobile brands. My very first mobile phone, gifted to me by father when I was early on in the University, properly convinced that I didn’t need a mobile phone, was a Sony Ericsson. It was a small mobile phone, the name of which escapes me now. I may still have it, somewhere, in some drawers, lost but not forgotten. I used it until it nearly died out. The engravings on the buttons grew muddled, colour on the handset faded out, the battery dead, replaced and dead again, etc. It would be safe to say, in hindsight, that I used it heavily.

My second mobile phone was another Sony Ericsson. It was the first mobile phone I bought. I was immensely excited the night I bought it, on way from work. The excitement of buying a new gadget is one that doesn’t ever diminish in its intensity, never goes away, no matter how many gadgets you buy. It is there right around the time you decide to buy a new gadget, and lasts well until after you’ve bought it. That was my second Sony Ericsson phone, and would be my last.

After I had made heavy use of it, I slowly moved away from it over to Nokia. I had a mammoth but reliable Nokia E61 lying around, which I was using for testing Symbian applications. Yes, this was roughly the time when I worked on Symbian application development. And that is all I am going to say of it.

My fourth and current mobile phone is a successor to E61: Nokia E72. I loved that phone when I bought it. I still love it in some ways. While E61 could be said to be too, E72 is what you would call a proper smart-phone. It features a lot of things that could help you do all sorts of things on the Internet, besides the usual functions of phone. It also has a full QWERTY keyboard. While I had owned an iPod Touch, I’d not been a big fan of touch screen and touch phones. I strongly believed that I could never be able to reliably use a phone with touch screen as the only form of input. This bias was in part due to my reliance on and affinity for physical QWERTY keyboards on phones.

Over the past couple of months, I was growing a little frustrated with my E72. While it worked as anyone would expect of it, I found that as far as applications that let me run wild on the Internet were concerned, it was severely limited. Sure, there were applications to do anything from using Facebook to Twitter to Foursquare. But I felt stifled. There were browsers but I didn’t feel the urge to browse anything on my mobile, unless it was an absolute emergency. I could post tweets on Twitter, but I didn’t enjoy interacting with others’ tweets. The same could be said of my experiences with Facebook (as far as I can tell, there is no native, official application for Facebook from Facebook for Symbian S60) or Foursquare applications. It just wasn’t fun, or even comfortable.

So for the past couple of months, I had been strictly debating getting an iPhone. iPhone 4S was out by then and it made no sense to get anything below that model. Some friends suggested time and again to go for the iPad instead. Where I was almost convinced that iPhone 4S would be my fifth phone, the recommendations for iPad threw my mind back in a state of confusion. Naturally, I compared the pros and contrasted the cons of both devices. Of course, one is a phone, the other a tablet, but when I compared the iPhone to the iPad, I actually compared it with iPad and my E72. That is, if I were to get an iPad, I would continue to use my E72 for the phone needs. There was a big difference in price as well, with a factory unlocked iPhone 4S coming at an exorbitant 67k PKR locally, while an iPad2 with WiFi cost only 48k PKR.

I still remember clearly the night I was at the club on the courts, playing tennis with my partner. He had finally bought the iPhone 4 a day before, after having looked for the white one for under a week. That night, I came home, and finally made up my mind.

The next afternoon, I was at the Apple Store I regularly buy from, purchasing an iPad2 WiFi with 16GB disk space. I had decided it. As I would find out, it was one of the best decisions I had made in my life in a while.

Those familiar with the different iPad2 models available will know that there’s a WiFi + 3G one available. Apart from having to pay under 10k PKR more, the main reason why I decided against getting the 3G model was the unavailability of 3G in the country. I know that you don’t necessarily have to have 3G to be able to use the connection, because any type of data-plan from your provider, such as GPRS or EDGE, will work. However, as I will explain, iPad is a content consumption device. When I say that it is a content consumption device, I mean it in a massive way. It has been designed for consuming a lot of content, including in the form of video, audio, and text. When I decided to buy it, I imagined myself using the iPad like I do my laptop. And I can’t ever imagine using my laptop over EDGE/GPRS in a way that satisfies me. Similarly, I didn’t think the iPad would shine on an EDGE/GPRS connection.

In the next post, I will explain exactly how the arrival of iPad has changed my life, how it has affected it, how I use it, where and when I use it. I will also list down the wonderful apps I use frequently, and make an argument for iPad being an awesome device for reading books/content in particular.

Playing around with my new iPhone 4

Posted on 15 January 2012 by Tea Server

Ah, sure am glad the wider landscape keyboard came up for writing a blog post on my iPhone. Yep, finally managed to get one and been installing all my favourite cloud based applications like Evernote and Dropbox. So far it’s been an interesting experience, apart from the initial hassle of setting up an Apple account to download the apps.

It’s an iPhone 4, without the “s”. Yes I can’t experience the dual core power of the newer version, but i guess that’s of better use for gaming and stuff, for which I already have my old friend the PSP. By the way, I was looking for a comparison of the PSP and the iPhone processor because the screenshots of some iPhone games that I saw weren’t as good as the PSP. I have mostly been browsing, tweeting, and typing on the phone so far… and oh yes, taking macro shots of fruits and insects as well. Love the touch focus feature!

So before I bought this, I was a bit double minded about whether I should go for an iPad or an iPhone, since I was mainly interested in reading documents on the go, being able to take notes and then put them up on the cloud for use on the computer. I guess the phone was a better decision because it gives me more portability, at the cost of screen size ofcourse, which I think shouldn’t be a huge problem since I probably would have read documents off the pad for the first few weeks! Document reading isn’t that pleasant with the smaller screen, but it’s way better than the reading experience on the PSP Bookr homebrew. The ability to scroll around PDF files and view their images is smooth. I wonder why there isn’t a built in support for OpenOffice documents; most of my stuff is done on that.

Dropbox didn’t download all my data from the cloud, but it allows me to specify some of the shared documents as “favourites”, and that allows me to work with them offline. It also allows me to specify the local storage on the phone so that things don’t get too out of hand. Pretty handy when I would have to review stuff at a remote location without internet access.

Typing seems to be pretty smooth. The autocorrect seems to be playing its role well. The only problem with these touch phones is that you can’t feel the buttons you’re pressing, which can easily lead to typos. Apple is probably working on that; some kind of screen which would send very small electrical signals back to the users fingers to give a touch sensation. Kind of like giving little electric shocks, but I already felt a very light tingling in the phones outer metal frame when I was using it with the data cable plugged in. Had similar electrical ground related issues on my hp laptops metal body, not sure if Apple recognises this as a problem, since hp says that these little jolts don’t do any harm. Well, it might help me to live longer.

The battery just went down a couple of percentages as I’m typing this with the wifi on. Made a mistake on the first night I bought it by not turning off the “use mobile services” feature, and that drained all of my credit, along with a fourth of the battery overnight.

Okay, I guess that should be enough for a first post about the phone coming from the phone itself. More will follow, and hopefully it will take the limelight off my Samsung phone blog post which I give credit for bringing a good deal of inquisitive and often annoying traffic to my blog.

Breakfast time, ciao!

How to Close All Background iOS Apps at Once

Posted on 06 January 2012 by Tea Server

www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGWQBjt95AY

When you double-tap the home button of your iPad or iPhone, the dock will show a list of all the recently used apps and some of them could still be running in the background.

You tap and hold your finger on the app icon until it begins to jiggle and you can then press the red “minus” sign (screenshot) to close one or more of these background apps. If a particular app is not running, this action will simply remove its listing from the multitasking bar.

Close All Background Apps at Once

If you would like to close all the background apps at once, here’s a free app for iPhone and iPad that can help. You don’t even have to jailbreak your device.

Launch the app and then shake your iPhone / iPad to terminate every single app that could be running in the background. Alternatively, you can just pull and release the processes list (see video) to close all the background running apps at once.

Should You Quit Background Apps Manually?

If you are on Windows or Mac, you always quit applications that you are not using so that more memory (RAM) becomes available to front-running apps. However, you many not see any improvement in performance by closing background iOS apps.

Here’s an excerpt from a Q&A that Engadget had with Steve Jobs:

Engadget: How do you close applications when multitasking?
Jobs: In multitasking, if you see a task manager, they blew it. Users shouldn’t ever have to think about it.

John Gruber explains why closing background apps isn’t required:

The iOS multitasking bar is not like the command tab switcher on Mac or Windows. It is not a list of currently “running” applications. It is simply a list of your most recently used applications, whether they’re running in the background, suspended in memory, or completely inactive.

Exception – Kill the Misbehaving Apps

In the past, I have seem apps, especially games, that became unresponsive (freeze) and force-quit was the only way to get them working again. The Process Killer app mentioned above might be helpful in such situations though else you need not worry about shutting down suspended background apps.

Easily Export your Nokia Contacts to another Phone

Posted on 03 January 2012 by Tea Server

nokia contacts

The address book of your Nokia phone is stored in the online Ovi Contacts – just like Android phones use Google Contacts – but with one big limitation.

Ovi, until now, offered no export feature so there was no easy way to download your phone’s address book from the web to the computer unless you had a Nokia device at hand. The Ovi Suite, Nokia’s desktop synchronization software, didn’t have an export option for Contacts either so your phone contacts were sort-of locked in Nokia’s cloud.

Shubha earlier wrote:

I was using a Nokia E-72 and the data was backed up on Ovi.com, so it’s online and not on my laptop. I am now using an iPhone and would like to sync my contacts but how shall I do that? The original Nokia phone was unfortunately stolen.

Well there’s an easy solution now.

Nokia is discontinuing the Ovi Contacts website (the service will stay but you won’t be able to access your address book from the web browser) and this could be a blessing in disguise for people like Shubha who have moved from Nokia to other platforms.

Nokia has set up a microsite – exportcontacts.ovi.com – where you can download your entire Ovi address book in the popular CSV format with a click. You don’t need the Nokia device or the Ovi desktop suite to export your contacts. The CSV file can can then be imported into Google Contacts and it will intelligently merge the duplicate contacts.

You got to do this soon as, according to an email from Nokia, the web access to Ovi Contacts will be disable after January 24, 2012.

Random things stuffed in my brain.

Posted on 01 January 2012 by Tea Server

Hey Mr.Blog (Bubblieee),

You know you are awesome. Happy 2012. I don’t get the point Mr.bubblieee why people even celebrate this year. I mean what difference does it make. We talk about money. We almost spend dozens on this. Lightening up the sky, and being crazy for updating our statuses sharp at twelve a.m. I mean for we Pakistani this year has been dark. Today when we are in crisis. With shortage of gas and electricity or the wide range of funerals; we stand there where we need to pray and struggle hard to bring back what was ours. So what’s the celebration for? I mean fine its going to be 2012 but that’s how the world goes on, years come and go. Its absurd to watch others celebrate and copy them as if you were a parrot. I know I am crazy, I am stupid. And Okay now don’t say me that “You are not a loser” because I’d only reply “Only my mama and papa can tell me that. My friends can tell me the truth”. Now don’t tell me I took that from a movie. I just felt the same that someone felt in the action movie once. Forget it. What I want to ask you is that why on earth you can’t be Siri? For what Iphone 4s is being famous. I mean why can’t you be like Siri, talking. Answering me. Huh!

Wake up. I am writing to you instead typing at the dead of night. And I feel different. I mean I have got these mixed feelings in me. I just want to keep “blah-ing” and “blah-ing”.  To the world I’ll blabber but to myself I’ll try diffusing the unwanted data in my brain.
You know I want to fly (don’t even portray me as a pilot) with the birdies. I just want to watch Allah painting the sky at the time when dusk starts to take over dawn. I want to see them trying to overlap each other to spread on the sky. I want to wear that blanket. I want to experience the silence of water, the waves drumming in my ears. And then being mesmerized on how they even keep drumming yet make no noise.
You know the thought of school re-opening on Monday is just so depressing. It’s so haunting. Its already gives me shiver. The feeling is so so yucky. I mean as if I am a nursery kid, crying while going to school. Winter Vacations got over. I just slept late in mornings, cooked, ate and slept late at night. I talked to myself. I tried again thinking and thinking about where I see myself in the next ten years. I wished that when ever I am done, when ever my work is done for what I entered this world; call me to you. I mean I just want to leave the world with some finished business. I want to make them proud who raised me. I want to make those awesome gems around me proud who shared laughter with me. Allah I just want to see them happy. I don’t want those beautiful gems and that awesome-est couple who has been my shield to cry. I want my birdies to sing forever.
You know bubblieee when I said that after a while I thought and thought and then came to a conclusion that Allah will call me when ever he wants. Life and death is in his hands. Why do I need to ask him to call me when I am done with the reason for my existence. I should have asked him a life that would leave everything the way it was, happy! I should have thanked him like I always did and ask him to give me the courage to live a longer life. Because my inner soul said “Darling nobody always gets what he or she wants. At the end of the day even millionaires think they aren’t satisfied. They have got money but they don’t get happiness. So like this every human searches another stop for himself after every success that is celebrated! He wants more. Thus the reason of our existence never ends. Our business never ends. We in reality are nomads although homo-sapiens. We never settle in one place. We start a voyage in the hunt for a new discovery.

And that’s when I realized that my life, my aim would never end. It would go on and on. That’s how we live.
I am going to write to you tomorrow because I feel sleepy and hungry. Monday you are awful, you should know that.

Allah help me tomorrow and everyday. I want you to hold my hand tight so that I can freely pass any broken bridge. Or travel on any wrecked ship. Thank-you so much Allah. I am sorry. I just feel so very very sorry! I want you to give my family all the happiness, help them to succeed in your examinations and give them the courage. For I don’t know at the end of the day what they feel when they go to sleep or if they are satisfied. I just don’t want tears. I want you to help us overcome them!

Bye Bubblieee.  Thank-you for bearing my talk.
Sincerely,
Your rotten old onion.

PS: Your name (Bubblieee) is extremely stupid like you.
