Ben’s Story (Part 3)

Posted on 12 February 2012 by Tea Server

As promised, you can once more retreat into Ben’s strange world. Like last time, I would appreciate feedback, both positive and negative. Let me know if you, my wonderful reader,  want still more of Ben on the blog.

Regards,

Mehmudah

Ben squinted as he looked at his watch. It was 2:45 pm and Mom still hadn’t come to get him. He wondered if she was okay. She would get late sometimes but she would always show up. The latest she had been was 2:30 pm, that too because she had finally landed a job interview (though ironically not the job) and couldn’t make it in time for Ben.

It had been exactly an hour since he’d been waiting by the gate, and watched all of his classmates go home – Josh, Khaleel, Melanie, even the teachers had left. There was only the feisty looking African-American security guard who kept looking at his watch, wondering when Ben would finally leave. “God, please let Mom be alright,” Ben whispered nervously to himself. There was only one thing left to do. Ben hung his backpack over his shoulders and decided to walk home.

His stomach rumbled as he opened his tuckbox along the way and gratefully devoured the shoddy corned beef sandwich and even the squishy vegetables that he had rejected only a couple of hours back. It would be a long walk home, one that he had never taken by himself before. But thankfully Ben understood roads well and though the walk seemed impossibly lengthy, he was sure of where to go.

His backpack seemed heavier with every step as Ben walked on fatigued, dragging his feet on the pavement in the hot afternoon sun. An hour passed as Ben trudged along, silently praying for Mom. She was alone after all. After Mom had lost her job as a receptionist at a hotel, she would be at home all day and not know what to do with herself. Sometimes Ben would urge her to leave home, to at least let her skin get exposed to natural light. Wane and drawn she would talk little, and Ben would take cue and keep mum. He still cared though, and he knew she would never abandon him – not without a good enough reason anyway, he thought wryly to himself.

“What a sight for sore eyes!” Ben exclaimed to himself as he at long last saw his red brick building come into view. It was a small two-bedroom apartment in a rundown building with graffiti all over it but to Ben it was home. He climbed up the stairs to the second floor, and knocked on the door. There was no answer and when Ben gently turned the knob he was surprised when the door flew open.

“Mom? Please be alright Mom,” Ben said feverishly. He ran to her bedroom and opened the door. And gasped.

She was lying sprawled, face down on her bed, the ashtray full of (Ben counted) twenty cigarette stubs. Next to her bed were no less than 6 empty cans of Budweiser. “What the h-h-hell, M-m-mom? Are you okay?” Ben tapped her shoulder. She stirred. Then she sleepily opened her eyes. “Yes, Ben?”

Ben sighed with relief. She was alive. He thought he would burst into tears. Mom was okay, and she was talking to him. “Whoa M-m-mom! I’m h-h-hungry! Think you could f-f-f-fix me something? I, er, walked home, right?” Ben said, smiling.

“Ben? I need to sleep. Close the door after you, will you?” She said, in a drunken stupor, her breath full of beer and smoke.

Ben exhaled slowly. She was SLEEPING. Sleeping as in – on her bed, safe and sound and she’d forgotten all about Ben, as though he didn’t exist. He fumed. He’d show her. “Sure Mom. Be right out,” he said as he quietly exit the door. She didn’t notice when he took the key and locked her in. “That’ll show her,” he said, seething.

Ben walked into the kitchen and felt repulsed at the pile of dishes in the sink, immersed in day-old gray dishwater. He found a clean bowl and poured himself some cereal and milk. Ben was normally a calm character, but when something infuriated him this much, he felt as though his heart would burst with anger. As Ben washed up after his meal, he decided to fulfil a promise of sorts. Let’s see what the Quran said about parents! ****ed up parents, he said looking at the closed door.

After a quick search on Google, Ben had found what he was looking for. Ben read the following words shaking his head and swearing.

“Your Lord had decreed, that you worship none save Him, and (that you show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with you, say not “Fie” unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word. And lower unto them the wing of submission through mercy, and say: My Lord! Have mercy on them both, as they did care for me when I was young.”   [Quran 17:23-24]

“Sorry God, You helped me out with Josh and everything but I’m afraid I don’t agree at all,” Ben said contemptuously as he switched off his computer. He wished he could tell someone how Islam and Allah hadn’t gotten it right at all and that parents could screw up their children’s lives by just being careless! What if Ben had been raped or kidnapped or even killed? All because of her.

Khaleel. That very ‘good’ boy. He deserved to read this! He would call upon Khaleel. Khaleel lived only a few blocks from Ben’s place, and if Ben could walk for an hour in the sun, he could surely walk for fifteen minutes to give important information. Thankfully Ben knew exactly where Khaleel lived for they had once dropped him home. His family lived on the first floor of a two-storey house a few streets away from Ben’s building. He left the house, the key to his mother’s room safely in his pocket. “Not like the drunkard will get up anyway,” he said as he left the front door unlocked as he’d found it.

“E-e-excuse me? Is this Khaleel H-h-hussain’s house? I’m a c-c-c-classmate. My n-n-name is Ben,” he said nervously as he knocked on Khaleel’s front door.

A woman, who looked like she was in her mid-thirties, with a long scarf loosely covering her hair opened the door. For a moment she looked confused. Then she seemed to remember. “Oh of course, Ben! Come in my boy,” she said in heavily accented English. Ben walked in to the overwhelming smell of curry in the comfortable but small apartment. He removed his shoes as he saw Khaleel’s mother doing the same before she walked over the carpet. “I’ll just get Khaleel. You could sit here,” she said gesturing to the couch.

Ben made himself comfortable on the sofa and looked around him. He found outlandish calligraphy on the walls and apart from the curry, it was a pleasing little house, well-kept and furnished in colours of light green and yellow. Khaleel stumbled out his bedroom and could not hide his surprise at seeing Ben at home. “Ben! Are you, I mean how did you find – never mind! Hey man! How are things?” said Khaleel giving Ben a friendly slap on the back. Ben reminded him how he and his mom had once dropped Khaleel home and without wasting much time, Ben conveyed that he was here to discuss something important.

When Khaleel inquired what it was that Ben needed to say, Ben, full of emotion, stammering and stuttering over his words broke into a prolonged tirade about the Quran and what it said about the parents! Why wasn’t the ruling ubiquitous, Ben asked? What if the parents were screwing up their children’s lives? What did this Allah say then?

Khaleel appeared bewildered. He didn’t know Ben had been thinking about the Quran since that day in the computer lab after which Josh and the boys just hadn’t left him alone. Khaleel shrugged. “Ben, I really don’t know. I guess parents love us, right?” he responded hesitantly. Ben stood up to leave. “That’s all I w-w-wanted to say, r-r-really,” he said pulling his jacket over his shoulder. As he about to leave a voice interrupted him. “Ben, if I might have a word?”

It was Khaleel’s mother. Ben looked at her inquiringly. “I heard you two boys talking, and I wonder if I might tell you both something?” Reluctantly, and only to appear polite he walked back to the couch, his mind made up. Nothing she would say would affect him.

Khaleel’s mother did speak with an accent, but her voice had beautiful lilt to it. “You know Ben, when I went through the labour of having Khaleel and his sister, I thought I’d die. Every single day when I was pregnant, and then every moment after the children were born, it was only about the children, I couldn’t think without them anymore. And parents falter too, you know? They get tired, they get depressed, even hopeless. That’s when they need us the most. I get angry with Khaleel and I know there are moments when he gets hurt. But that doesn’t mean I will ever stop loving him,” she said gently.

Ben thought of his own mother sleeping peacefully back home. Was she depressed? Most certainly. Hurt him? Defnitely. Lonely? For sure. Hopeless? Yeah, totally. Did that mean he was supposed stand by her and all that crap? What had she done for him anyway?

As if on cue, Khaleel’s mother spoke. “And we don’t realize how much our parents do for us, do we? It took an hour just to give Khaleel his bowl of morning cereal when he was small, but his father and I made sure we did it. We drive him around, love him, are there for him – am I right young man?” she said to Khaleel. Khaleel smiled sheepishly. “’Course Ammi,” he responded.

“Maybe they do make mistakes at times, but they’re human too aren’t they? Parents love us, and we should never doubt that! And just showing them kindness doesn’t sound too hard does it? Imagine the reward you get for it from Allah! Maybe their mistakes are not intentional. Maybe they’re in a lot of problems themselves,” she continued.

Ben squirmed uncomfortably in his seat as he thought of his mother back home. He should hurry home and check on her, because maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t to blame. Perhaps it wasn’t her fault. Ben left Khaleel’s house with an abrupt goodbye as he briskly walked back home, his heart racing. He got home quicker than he had gotten to Khaleel’s and ran up the stairs. Near the building he saw the 911 rescue van and wondered what had happened in the area.

To his utter surprise the front door was open and there were people inside. Someone – the police, had unhinged – or broken – his mother’s bedroom door. She was lying white and motionless near the entrance of her room, her cell-phone beside her. “She called 911 just before she passed out,” a paramedic informed a shocked Ben.

“She’s alive, but only just. It appears she might have had a heart attack, but we are not completely sure. She must be rushed to the hospital. Your mother was trying to leave her room, but realized she had asked her son to lock her in before leaving. She just about managed to say that to us on 911 and collapsed right after. Lucky for you son, or you might have ended up in jail for locking up your mother! Oh by the way, we found this under her pillow,” With that the paramedic handed Ben a small white envelope bearing the words “To My Ben” written in his mother’s barely legible scrawl. As they lowered her on the stretcher, Ben silently pocketed the white envelope. A solitary tear slipped quietly down his cheek.

To be continued…

Arroz basmati con pollo

Posted on 11 February 2012 by Tea Server

Facebook copies Google+ yet again!

Posted on 10 February 2012 by Tea Server

It’s strange why Facebook has to copy Google+ every now and then despite being the global market leader and it’s also not strange how we complain about the changes and later accept them. However, Facebook’s recent picture outlook with comments at the right (as can be seen above) is like giving a Google+ experience which [...]

This Valentine, Send your Loved One a Google Search Query

Posted on 10 February 2012 by Tea Server

Google Love Equation

This Valentine’s day, try sending your geeky loved one a Google search query instead of an e-greeting and they may like the little surprise that’s in store for them.

The Heart Equation for Google

When you put any Math equation in Google, it will try to plot of a graph of that equation just like your scientific calculation. And one such equation, listed below, renders a heart curve that you can pass on to your Valentine.

To give it a try, just copy-paste the following query in Google. Thanks Suhel.

sqrt(cos(x))*cos(300x)+sqrt(abs(x))-0.7)*(4-x*x)^0.01,
  sqrt(6-x^2), -sqrt(6-x^2) from -4.5 to 4.5

WordPress Plugins that Power Digital Inspiration

Posted on 08 February 2012 by Tea Server

WordPress PluginsAs some of you may know, this tech blog and my personal blog are both powered by WordPress software. What follows is a complete list of WordPress plugins that work behind the scenes to add new functionality to these sites that’s otherwise not available in the vanilla version of WordPress.org.

These are all free and open-source plugins and you can find them in the WordPress plugin repository.

The Best WordPress Plugins for your Website

1. Search Regex – This adds extremely powerful search and replace capabilities to your blog. You can find and replace almost any kind of data stored on your WordPress site including post titles, excerpts, comments, and meta data. It even supports regular expressions.

2. Redirection – If the URL of an existing post has changed or if an external site is linking to a non-existent page on my site, I can create redirection rules and automatically forward all the incoming traffic to the right pages.

3. Bing 404 – If someone lands on a 404 page for which redirection is not yet enabled, this plug-in will display links to relevant article on the error page. For example, a 404 page like labnol.org/googledocs will have links to my Google Docs articles.

4. WordPress SEO – This is probably the only SEO plugin you need for your WordPress blog. It helps you create better titles, you can block duplicate pages (like archive pages) from search bots, and it also adds the necessary meta tags required for more search-friendly Google snippets.

5. Hyper Cache – This is a caching plug-in for WordPress that will help reduce the load on your web server by saving pages as static HTML files. WP Total Cache is another popular caching plugin though I prefer Hyper Cache for its simplicity.

6. FB Open Graph – This plugin will insert the necessary Open Graph meta tags to your blog’s header so that you blog posts look good and have the right snippets when they are shared on Facebook or Google Plus.

7. 404 Email Notifier – This sends you an email notification as soon as a visitor lands on a 404 page on your WordPress website. The email messages have details about the visitor’s IP address, what browser they are using and the referral URL that led him to that broken link.

8. SlideShare – This helps you easily embed SlideShare presentations in blog posts with the help of short codes – see samples.

9. Smart YouTube – This lets you embed YouTube videos in blog posts using standing video URLs and the embedded player can be customized. It adds a thumbnail of the embedded video in the RSS feed and the same plug-in can also be used to embed videos from Facebook and Vimeo.

10. YARRP – The related posts plug-in adds links to old stories that may be contextually related to the content of the current story. It also helps expose your archived content to search bots.

11. WP Optimize – Use the WP Optimize plugin to clean-up your WordPress database tables. It can remove post revisions, trash spam comments and also optimize your MySQL tables so that it works more efficiently and also consumes less space.

12. WP-DBManager – This plugin will help you backup your WordPress database manually or you can set up a scheduled job for automatic backup and the database files will be sent to your email address at set intervals. Advanced users can use WP-DBManager to run SQL queries against their WordPress database without the phpMyAdmin tool. There are other plugins that can save backups to Amazon S3 and Dropbox.

13. Debug Queries – Is your blog slow? Use the Debug Queries plugin plugin to determine which MySQL queries are taking more time to execute and thus slowing down the blog. Debug Bar is another related plugin org that shows PHP warnings, queries and other helpful debugging information in the WordPress admin bar.

14. Auto Post Thumbnail – WordPress added support for Post Thumbnail Images in WordPress 2.9 but if you have been using WordPress for long, thumbnails may not be associated with your old posts. Use the Auto Post thumbnail plugin to automatically generate thumbnails for such posts using the first image found in the post content.

15. Regenerate Thumbnails – When you change the default size (height and width) of post thumbnails (or featured images) on your blog, you can use this plugin to regenerate thumbnails with the new dimensions.

16. Google XML Sitemaps – Since you want Google and other search engines to know about each and every page of your WordPress website, you need an XML sitemap and this plug-in lets you generate one in a click.

17. XML Video Sitemap – The plugin generates an XML Sitemap for your WordPress blog with all the YouTube videos that are embedded in your blog posts. I am also using XML Sitemap for Images and XML Sitemap for Mobile.

18. Date in a Nice Tone – This plugin offers an alternate way to display dates in your blog posts. It displays the amount of time – like “a few days ago,” or “in the last month,” or “over a year ago” – that has passed since a post or page was published.

19. SyntaxHighlighter Evolved – If you regularly embed code snippets in your WordPress blog posts, this plugin will help you highlight the syntax of the source code in different colors for more comfortable reading. Supports all popular programming languages.

20. Pubsubhubbub – This will help you beat content scrapers using Fat Pings. When you publish a blog post, it will instantly ping Google and that is a strong signal to the search engine that you are the original author.

21. WP-Associatizer – This plug-in will automatically rewrite any Amazon URLs in your posts to use your Amazon Associates ID.

22. Template Tag SC – WordPress offers numerous template tags – like wp_list_pages() or wp_tag_cloud() – that you can use in your theme files. The plugin will help you insert the sam template tags directly in your blog posts or pages using Short Codes.

23. Login Logger – This plugin logs the IP address and the exact date & time when a user logs into your WordPress dashboard. It also keeps track of any unsuccessful login attempts. Use this plugin in combination with Limit Login Attempts to automatically lock out users after they have made ‘n’ unsuccessful login attempts.

24. CF Shortcode – This helps you insert custom fields inside your WordPress posts using the visual editor. This comes extremely handy when you want to add custom JavaScript inside your WordPress posts.

25. Advanced Excerpt – The post excerpts in WordPress are fixed at 55 words and often displayed with [...] ellipsis at the end. This plugin lets you to specify a custom length of excerpts, you can get rid of the ellipsis and the excerpts can be configured to have full sentences so that there are no weird cuts.

WordPress Plugins – Retired but Useful

The first version of this list was published in 2010 and since then, I have removed or deactivated a few WordPress plugins. Here’s why:

1. WordPress.com Stats – I am using Google Analytics to track site stats and therefore it doesn’t make sense to have another tracking program for the same goal.

2. Akismet – The comments on this site are powered by Disqus and they seem to offer decent spam protection on their own.

3. WordPress PDA – This plugin helped serve the mobile version of this site based on their browser’s user agent. Digital Inspiration now uses a responsive design and thus the same site is served to both desktop and mobile users.

4. WP-Paginate – The paginate plugin provide better navigation and also helps search engines find and crawl deep content on your site. The new design of this site has pagination built-in and therefore this plugin is no longer necessary.

How to Get the Classic Photo Viewer in Facebook

Posted on 08 February 2012 by Tea Server

facebook photo viewer

Facebook has rolled out a Google+ style photo viewer that displays user comments and ads next to the picture in an overlay window. Thus, you don’t have to scroll the page to read the comments and the photo viewer adjusts itself as you re-size the browser window.

Switch to the Old Layout of Facebook Photos

If you are viewing any photo in Facebook and would like to use the classic layout – where photos are displayed on a separate page and not inside a pop-up – you can do that in a couple of ways:

  • While the photo viewer is active, press F5 on your keyboard (or hit the “reload” button in the browser) to refresh the Facebook photo page. This should open the photo without the overlay.
  • Or go to address bar of your browser, remove the string “&theater” from the photo URL and hit Enter.
  • Or the easiest option is that you hold the CTRL key while clicking the thumbnail of any photo on Facebook and this should open the corresponding photo in a new tab but without the lightbox effect.

Please see the following screencast for details.

Analysis: Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 to be United

Posted on 08 February 2012 by Tea Server

Microsoft will align its next major updates of Windows, both for phone and computers. Windows Phone 8 & Windows 8 will have several features and architecture in common like networking stacks, security and multimedia architecture.

It is also being reported that Windows Phone 8 will support multi-core processors, multiple screen resolutions, SD Cards and even C/ C++ programming. It is also worth noting that Windows 8 & Windows Phone 8 will both run Metro apps, hence harmonizing the user experience over various Microsoft devices and reducing the time in learning curve of the user.

In a video, Joe Belfiore, manager of Windows Phone for Microsoft, said that the intention is for developers to be able to

“re-use, by far, most of their code” when moving behind the desktop and smartphone platforms. This should also help Microsoft to seamlessly transition many of its existing PC developers to mobile, resulting in a much larger pool creating apps. (Quote Courtesy: Mobile Business Briefing)

If the unification of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 occurs as planned and some applications could be used in both platforms while others easily portable,  there is no doubt that a lot of developers will be attracted to develop apps for Windows based devices and hit maximum customers by a single app. This will also support the Windows Phone marketplace which has considerably lesser apps as compared to Apple Store and Android Market.

All of it depends on Microsoft’s ability to pull off the coup and change the app marketplace forever. However, if it fails to do so, Microsoft will lose credibility and will be left far behind Google and Apple especially in battle to attain superiority in the mobile and tablet platforms.

Export all your Google Docs Files with One Click

Posted on 07 February 2012 by Tea Server

export google docs

Do you want to put all your Google Docs files on a USB drive before you take that road trip? The Google Docs website does offer an easy option to help you download all your documents in one zip file but there’s another simpler alterative that you may want to give a try– it’s called Google Takeout.

Once you have logged in to Google Takeout with your Google Account, select the Google Docs service and hit the “Create Archive” button. It will create a zip file with all your Google Docs files and you can either keep the browser window open while the archive is being readied or download that file later from the Google Takeout website.

Google Takeout will export your Google Documents in standard Office file formats by default – Excel for spreadsheets or PowerPoint for Presentations – but you also have an option to export files in either PDF or OpenOffice formats.

Google Takeout is part of dataliberation.org, a Google project that wants to make it easy for you to import and export data out of various Google products. The same tool may also be used to export your Picasa photos and Contacts data out of Google Servers though, surprisingly, it doesn’t offer Gmail export yet.

Coming back to Google Docs, here’s a quick video that shows how easy it is to export your Google Docs files using Google Takeout.

Embed Images and Make your QR Codes Look Different

Posted on 06 February 2012 by Tea Server

qr code with logos

What is the first image that comes to your mind when you think of a QR Code? A confusing maze of black rectangular patterns arranged on a white background?

True, most QR Codes are available in black and white but they don’t have to be that way.

There’s an excellent online QR generator at qrhacker.com that lets you create colorful QR codes and what makes this tool different is that it provides you can option to embed photographs and logo images to your QR codes. You can even edit the colors of individual pixels that form the code.

To give you an example, here’s a QR code made using a picture of Zuckerberg and if you scan the code with an app on your phone, say Google Goggles, it should take you to Facebook.

Every QR code has a unique URL for easy sharing or you can download the image locally in PNG or PDF. Here are more examples.

Life of Mohammad Sallal laho Alaihi Wasallam

Posted on 06 February 2012 by Tea Server

“Perhaps the world was never in greater need of an accurate account of Prophet Muhammad’s life than it is now.” So states Adil Salahi, author of Muhammad: Man and Prophet 1. After 9/11, for whatever reason(s), many people began asking themselves: Just who is this Muhammad? As a result, awareness of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad has increased considerably. And yet so many people still do not really know who he was and what legacy he left behind. The recent infamous caricatures are a further reminder that many people’s understanding about Muhammad is indeed flawed and far from the facts.

Such a lack of knowledge is, however, rather surprising, for unlike most other prophets or religious personalities whose life stories are full of myths and legends, Muhammad lived in the full light of history. Almost every aspect of his life was recorded by those who lived with him and knew him intimately, and so we do not have to guess at what he said or did. When we read this vast body of literature, we can see that he was a man of exalted character and compassion, one who was kind and considerate to all people, regardless of how they treated him, and even to animals and plants. His revolutionary message changed not only his own society, but the very course of history, facts that even his bitterest enemies have acknowledged. Today, more than 1,400 years later, more than 1.5 billion people revere him and follow him as God’s last messenger.

The veneration of Muhammad is not limited to his followers, however. Many great philosophers, thinkers, and reformers have praised him and said that it would be to humanity’s great benefit to follow his teachings. George Bernard Shaw called him “the savior of humanity” and said: “I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it much needed peace and happiness.” 2 Echoing him, French historian Lamartine wrote: “As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he?” 3 Similar statements were made by Thomas Carlyle, Edward Gibbon, and Mahatma Gandhi, to name only a few.

Born in Makka in 570, Muhammad grew up as an orphan: his father died before he was born, and his mother died when he was only six years of age. He remained unlettered along with most of his contemporaries. But His noble and upright character, as displayed in his dealings with people while he was growing up, raised his status so high in the eyes of his fellows that they nicknamed him al-Ameen (the Trustworthy) long before he was chosen by God as His final messenger. Only after Muhammad declared his prophet-hood did the Makkan polytheists turn against him.

When the Makkan leaders unleashed their hostility against him and his companions, he could still be heard saying: “O Allah! Forgive my people, for they don’t know.” For example, when he went to Ta’if, a village about 50 miles southeast of his hometown, Makkah, to spread Islam, they set the street urchins upon him, who chased him and threw rocks at him until they drove him out of town. Even at that point, when he was utterly exhausted and bleeding from head to foot, all he said was, “O my Lord, guide my people along the true path, as they are ignorant of the truth.” This is just one of the many examples in the life of the Prophet who faced constant death threats, actual attempts on his life, and abuse and humiliation at the hands of those threatened by his simple yet profound message: there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger.

When the Makkan Quraish forced him and his companions to leave Makkah, the prophet migrated to Madinah. Even in Madinah, the Prophet and his followers were not left alone to practice their religion. The Makkan leaders rallied forces to eliminate him and his followers. It was in this context that the Prophet took up arms to defend himself and his followers. Yet, while doing so, he never compromised the sacred principle of sanctity of life and the ethics of just war. He never allowed the killing of anyone except those involved in the fighting; he issued clear orders against killing of civilians, including women, children, and even those who were engaged in worship of any kind. Later when Muhammad prevailed over the Quraish and conquered Makkah, he pardoned his enemies and let them go free.

Today no matter how Islamophobes taunt him or label Islam, the fact is that Prophet Muhammad never preached violence. It is simply mind-boggling that he would be made responsible for any individual Muslim’s misreading of his message or committing any mischief in the name of Islam. Contrary to the widely held notion in the west, the very concept of ‘holy war’ even does not exist in Islam. According to Islam, war can only be characterized as either just or unjust, not holy. The Qur’an is categorical in denouncing all wars of aggression. “And fight in God’s cause against those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression-for, verily, God does not love aggressions.” (Quran 2:190) The Qur’an also forbids Muslims from attacking anyone who allows others to live in peace. “Thus, if they let you be, and do not make war on you, and offer you peace, God does not allow you to harm them.” (Quran 4:90)

As a matter of fact, Muhammad preached mercy and respect to all of God’s creation. His heart was filled with love for people irrespective of their caste, creed, color or gender. He advised his Companions to regard all people as their brothers and sisters. He said, “You are all Adam’s offspring and Adam was born of clay.” The Prophet is also reported to have said, “By God, he is not a believer, by God, he is not a believer, by God, he is not a believer, with whom his neighbors are not secure.” The Prophet never ever tolerated any indecent manner, let alone any injustice done to anybody. He warned the Muslims against the mistreatment of non-Muslims in a Muslim-dominated land by saying: “Whoever oppresses the non-Muslim subjects, shall find me to be their (oppressed people’s) advocate on the Day of Judgment (against the oppressing Muslims)”. He also said, “Those who commit injustice upon people in this world will be the most losers in the hereafter and will find their place in the Hellfire.” The Prophet thus taught people how to live among others like flowers, not like thorns.

The Prophet’s own example was testified by Anas ibn Malik, who served the Prophet for ten years. He said that the Prophet never ever rebuked him. “When I did something, he never questioned my manner of doing it; and when I did not do something, he never questioned my failure to do it. He was the most good-natured of all men.” Indeed, the Prophet was an extremely tender-hearted person. “Repel evil with good” was his dictum and policy. He was considerate to his family and friends. He was a loving father, a generous husband and a caring neighbor. His gentleness, dignified demeanor, his universal benevolence and courtesy, his equal treatment of friends and strangers, the powerful and the weak and his generosity to the latter naturally endeared him to those who came in touch with him, and gained him respect, love and admiration. He was the exemplifier and embodiment of all the best a person can think of or aspire to be.

In short, Muhammad preached a religion, founded a state, laid down a moral code and brought all out reforms. His sublime teachings have passed the test of time and place in that these are universal values sought after by mankind in all ages and places. Following his footsteps is the surest way to establish “kingdom of God” on the earth once again.

The world has witnessed many prophets including the towering figures of Abraham, Moses and Jesus (peace and blessings of God be upon them all), and Muhammad paid high tributes to all of them and made it incumbent upon his followers to do the same. Many great thinkers, philosophers and leaders also made great contributions to human civilization, but none of them superseded the achievements and impacts of Muhammad . His greatness is truly unique. A mercy to the mankind, he is the most remarkable man ever set foot on this earth.

How can anyone mock and malign such an icon of history–someone who is the pride of whole humanity? Surely, it’s either ignorance or prejudice which is breeding this sort of bigotry. It’s also an insult on human conscience and intelligence.

Muhammad , the man, is the greatest testimony to the truth he preached. Let us know this man, explore his truths and make this world a better place to live in.
