Cloud Storage and Cloud Computing

Posted on 10 January 2012 by Tea Server

Cloud Computing continues to dominate the IT world. As the leading trend in the industry, businesses are learning they can slash costs and improve productivity by relocating their IT resources in the cloud. Cloud technologies have relieved small businesses of many cumbersome administrative duties and have allowed them to produce more by using mobile and remote workers.

As cloud technologies evolve, companies are finding that data management is the largest cost associated with IT. Centralizing all types of data in the cloud had reduced that cost, by blending platform, infrastructure, software and storage services. Although the different elements of the cloud are becoming less distinct over time, the core role of the cloud, data storage, continues to grow in importance.

Problems with Local Storage

Companies have grappled with issues of data storage for a long time. In the workplace, employees at local workstations often store data to the hard drive on their computer rather than on the server, making that data difficult for other employees to locate and retrieve. At the same time, local workstations have posed a data security threat because rogue employees regularly copy company data from local servers to removable storage and make it available for sale or use it for unauthorized personal use.

Network-wide data access problems are often exacerbated by a lack of a comprehensive backup plan that leaves companies dead in the water in the event of server or workstation failures. Even worse, some businesses find themselves hampered by a lack of sufficient storage space. Lacking time and expertise, many companies regularly choose to delete archives to free up server space rather than add storage capacity to their local network.

Remote and mobile workers have long experienced frustration with data access problems. Data stored on an employee’s workstation at the office is often inaccessible to VPN users. Meanwhile, much of the work they do ends up being stored on local hard drives that belong to the employees, not the company.

Do Check: How to Back up Your Data

These dilemmas are just a few of the data storage problems business face almost daily. Thanks to the development of cloud technologies, businesses can liberate their employees, utilize the global workforce and secure their data all at once.

Cloud Storage Basics

In its basic form, cloud storage acts like a hard drive, linked to a computer or server by a small program that runs locally. When a user saves data, it goes to the cloud drive rather than to a local hard drive. In the cloud, the data is scanned for viruses, secured and backed up by cloud service providers. Business data is now accessible to all authorized users in the company. When a company needs more storage capacity, all they do is ask for it and it’s available almost immediately without any administrative overhead.

When companies rely on cloud-based software services, cloud storage becomes even more important. Software administrators can restrict applications so they save data only to cloud storage, instantly solving various problems ordinarily associated with traditional software and data storage models.
