Affidavets of COAS & ISI Chief to SCP

Posted on 16 December 2011 by Tea Server

Following are the text of affidavits exclusively for my readers:

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) in his reply to the Supreme Court stated that the memo was a reality and a conspiracy was being hatched against the army and national security.
In the reply General Kayani writes that the Financial Times published Mansoor Ijaz’s story about the memo on October 10. COAS Kayani was informed about DG ISI General Pasha’s meeting with Mansoor Ijaz on October 24 and Pasha was of the opinion that there was enough evidence to validate the authenticity of the memo. The DG ISI said there was evidence which illustrated that Ijaz was in touch with Hussain Haqqani between May 9-11 and that they exchanged text messages and phone calls. Kayani says on October 28 the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry and Presidency denied the memo in separate statements. Admiral Mike Mullen through his spokesperson first denied receiving the memo on November 8 but a few days later confirmed its receipt.
The reply goes on to state that on November 13, during a meeting with Prime Minister Gilani, I (Kayani) advised that those points of the memo which were leaked were very sensitive and that a decision had to be made on its being real or not. According to the reply Kayani strongly insisted that the Prime Minister summon Haqqani so he can brief the country’s leadership about this matter.
Kayani told the prime minister that time was limited and the sooner we found out the facts the better it would be.
On November 15, Kayani said he was called by the President for a meeting and met him at two in the afternoon.
According to Kayani the prime minister had already informed the president about his recommendations. President Zardari informed Kayani that the decision to summon Haqqani had already been made.
On November 21, US General James Jones confirmed that he had taken the memo to Mullen.
Kayani said that he was part of a meeting which also included the prime minister, president and DG ISI on November 22.
It was during this meeting that Haqqani briefed all of them and Prime Minister Gilani asked for Haqqani’s resignation and ordered an investigation.
Towards the end Kayani writes that there was enough evidence validating the memo and there should be full review to evaluate the circumstance and facts behind it.
General Kayani said that the memo tried to decrease the morale of the Pakistan Army but was unsuccessful in doing so.
DG ISI Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha submitted to the Supreme Court:
Respectfully submitted;
1. Respondent No 7 has not received any petition till now. However, in compliance with the orders of the Honourable Court dated 1.12.2011 reply is submitted herein:
2. Media Wing of ISI brought to my notice the piece published in the Financial Times on the 10th of October. It was written by one Mr Mansoor Ejaz. The writer had, in this article, criticised the ISI’s role and suggested some actions against the Organization. This was usual anti ISI rhetoric.
3. But I did find the opening paragraph of this piece quite unusual and damaging. It mentioned that a senior Pakistani official had been attempting to pass on a message to senior US leaders indicating imminence of a military takeover in Pakistan. The whole thing looked intriguing. I concluded that one could write such a piece so blatantly unless he had some evidence to support his assertions. I, therefore, tasked my sources to know about Mr Mansoor Ijaz and find out if he would agree to share the information about the purported Memorandum.
4. It was confirmed to me by my sources that Mr Mansoor ijaz was ready to share the information but only with the Director General and also not in Pakistan. He insisted that the meeting shall be without any aides on both sides. Accordingly, a meeting was thus planned and took place in London on 22nd of October 2011.
5. Mr Mansoor Ijaz briefed me that our Ambassador in Washington had gotten in touch with him and remained in communication about the contents and delivery of the Memo to the relevant US authorities. He also showed me the proof of a large number of messages sent through BlackBerry which had been exchanged between our Ambassador in Washington and him regarding the document, which later came to be known as the Memorandum. He explained to me in fair amount of details about the circumstances leading to the drafting of Memo and why it was delivered through him. I told him, that I could not believe him unless I saw his BlackBerry and Computer myself to form an opinion that the messages were really exchanged between the two individuals. Having seen these means of communication used, I was satisfied that he had enough corroborative material to prove his version of the incident. He insisted that he will present the details of the evidence himself before a commission or court of law, if asked to do so.
6. I left London the next evening and reported my findings verbally to the Chief of Army Staff on 24th October 2011.
7. I met the Honourable President of Pakistan on 18th of November 2011 when this matter also came under discussion and I briefed him on what, according to my assessment, the facts were. I also suggested to him the issue pertained to National Security and should not be taken lightly. I suggested to the President that it will be in the fitness of things to ask our Ambassador in Washington to verify or contradict the matter.
8. The Respondent has the honour to lead ISI, an organization that stands in forefront, particularly during the peace time, to safeguard the security of the Country as well as the honour and respect of its people. Men and women under command of the Respondent continue to risk their lives and those of their children to positively contribute to the overall security calculus of the Country. All our efforts are geared towards that end.
9. The Respondent, in his humble personal capacity, maintains that access to unadulterated truth and justice is a right of the people of Pakistan, the real sovereign masters of this Country. To this end, Honourable Court may, if deemed appropriate, graciously consider the following:-
a. May kindly summon Mr Mansoor Ijaz to appear before the Honourable Court as he alone holds the real evidence, as claimed by him. He has already, at a number of occasions, indicated his willingness to do so, through the print and electronic media.
b. May kindly demand forensic examination of the computers and all the cell phones and Black Berry Telephones used since May 2011 till date by the both, Mr Mansoor Ijaz and our Ex Ambassador to the US.
c. May kindly consider retrieval of the Call Record Data related to this incident from the Black Berry as well as other service providers, if any.
10. Under the circumstances, the answering Respondent shall comply with all the directions given by this Honourable Court in the matter and render necessary assistance to its appointed commission whenever so required.

Chapter 6

Posted on 07 December 2011 by Tea Server

It was time to say goodbye. Theyhad made no promises, no commitments. But Delgadina knew this was far fromover. And yes, dear reader, it was only just the beginning.
She shook his hand goodbye, and shefought back tears. And as she looked into his eyes, she saw that they hadgotten dangerously moist too. He cared. And it made her heart soar.
She did not know when she would see him again,or if she would see him at all. But she knew he was worth the long distance. Theyhad cell phones, emails, and all sorts of technology. As long as they stayedtogether, the distance would hardly matter.
The next two months passed in ablur. She started school again, and began to deal with the problems of universitylife. He spent his days at his job. In between, they would send each other textmessages. Sometimes they were trivial; they would talk about their day, wisheach other good night before they slept. Sometimes they were meaningful, whenthey would talk about their lives. They called each other sometimes, but shewas always too shy to talk to him for long.
He talked to her the most when hewas drunk. He bared his soul. He would tell her his fears, he would talk to herabout his sadness. And as sad as those conversations were, her heart soaredwhen she saw that he felt he could trust her enough to tell her about hisdeepest, darkest secrets. In turn, she would tell him hers. She talked abouther problems at home, how she never got along with her abusive mother, and howher traditional self could never get accustomed to the fast ways of the girlsaround her. She would feel an inner glow when he told her he was proud of herfor not succumbing to the level of her friends, how she was dignified and actedlike a lady.
It was not a relationship, not yet. They were still getting to know each other. She was in love with him, of thatshe was absolutely sure. But she was not going to tell him, not unless she wassure he loved her too. And she felt it was clichéd to use the same old wordsthat everyone used to describe an infatuation that faded away with time. What shefelt for him was much more permanent. And when the time came, she wanted theright words.
But he was the poet between themafter all. He beat her to it, and in a such a beautiful way, it took her breathaway.
It happened like this: she wenthome for a break, just as winter began to set in. It was the start of October, heruniversity was closed because it was a national holiday. She told him she wascoming back home, but she could not promise if she was going to see him. It wasjust a weekend after all, she may not have time. Or her conservative family maynot allow her.
But she found an excuse. And on aSaturday morning, when she knew he would be at the bank, she ignored his textsand she showed up at the bank. In the beginning, she could not find him. And shewas swarmed with other coworkers who were glad to see her. So she took herregular seat at his desk and waited for him to come back from where he was. Andhe did. He took one look at her face and he burst into a smile. And she smiledback. For the longest of time, they just kept smiling at each other, not sayinganything. Like two young children, newly in love, very, very shy and at a lossof words to express their joy.
She sat with him for an hour beforeit was time for her to leave. When she got into her car, her cell phone buzzed. She opened her text messages and saw that he had sent her something.
‘I feel spiritually cleansed,’ he’dwritten. ‘Thank you.’
And that was not all. That night,he went drinking with his friends. And he sent her another text.
‘U2 – All I want is you’.
She asked him what that meant. Hetold her it meant what it said. And that was all he needed to say. Express hislove with a song. A beautiful love song that, to this date, Delgadina stillassociates with him.

How Can Facebook Help Generate More Business Leads?

Posted on 06 December 2011 by Tea Server

Facebook with its massive outreach to over 800 million active users globally has become an ultimate promotional tool for businesses and simply cannot be ignored.

Those who label it as timewaster would be astonished by taking a quick browse on reasons for considering Facebook as a promotional
tool for any business:

It is the single platform that connects its users speaking 70 languages. According to Facebook stats, over 400 million users visit their newsfeed at least once every day; this connects (on an average) them to eighty community pages, Facebook groups or events posted by their contacts. Users consider this platform as a good tool to upload photos. It has become so popular that on an average over 250 million photos are being uploaded every day!

With an increasing use through mobile devices, this application is now accessed by more than 350 million users via their cell phones or Smartphones. This gives Facebook an extra ordinary outreach to people on the go.

I found an interesting illustration on Facebook stats at Mashable by infographis. According to these statistics, average age of Facebook users have increased from 36 to 38 years, 20% comment on other users photo, 26% like other user content, 22% comment on other user post or update, 10% inbox other user, 15% update their status.

But for business what this all means and how can they use Facebook in a simple way to attract more business and make more money? Let’s see few basic options on facebook for an enthusiastic business:

This starts with creation of a Facebook fan page for your business. This can be created under your Facebook account by using simple steps given here. This is your presence, your branding; your engagement with your customers, hence logically speaking, your profile picture should be the logo of your company or business. Once created, your simple page can be used for promoting a product, announcing a deal, responding to a customer’s enquiry etc.

The rule is simple; more active pages attract more LIKES. For instance Dr Pepper has the an active fan page with 10,851,243 fans of which 115, 914 were actually discussing the product and Wall Mart with 10,757,285 fans of which 159,794 contributing via comments. If you want to see more such examples, I recommend you visit Jim Tobin’s blog “Which Brands Have the Most Active Facebook Fans? Analyzing the Top 50.”

Other ways to engage the community is through competitions. This can generate a lot of interest. For example Culligan Pakistan has 17,700 fans of which 139 were engaged in conversation. Culligan’s strategy is to engage fans through quiz. One can learn how to initiate a quiz competition through this example.

Once you have a fan page, the next big thing is to attract fans. At this stage there are two possibilities, first is to use all social media channels such as twitter, your Facebook friends and linkedin and divert people towards your fan page. This is a slow process. If you really want to go quick, I recommend Facebook Ads.

General rule of thumb is that a fan can cost you anything between 1 cent and US$1.5, depending on demography you set. This is a useful tool, but in my view one should take advice from an expert before jumping onto Facebook Adverts. I recently advised a friend who runs a travel
business
to use this option. He generated 140 leads in five days at a cost of US$50!

In my view every business has a common goal that is to generate more business and serve more customers – Facebook can certainly help is achieving this goal.

“Farman Ali Khan” How many of us know him?

Posted on 04 December 2011 by Tea Server

Farman Ali Khan

Farman Ali Khan, a Pakistani martial arts champion lost his life while trying to save several people getting drowned in the 2009 devastating Jeddah floods. Farman has recently been awarded the King Abdul Aziz Medal by Saudi Arabia. Pakistan government has also conferred a gallantry medal of bravery on him.

Nov. 25, 2009 will remain engraved in the history of Jeddah. Just after dawn that day dark clouds began gathering over the Red Sea port city. For the rain-starved population, it started as a celebration. On the main streets of Jeddah one could see youngsters splashing through the puddles. A little later the light rain intensified into a heavy downpour.

A view of the flood havoc!

The rainwater swallowed everything and left traces of destruction in the city’s history. Many died, and damage was estimated in the millions. People caught up in the torrent were washed away in waters thick with debris as everyone watched helplessly one onlooker, 32-year-old Farman, did much more than just watching the people drowning.

An expatriate worker from Pakistan’s Swat Valley, he worked at a grocery store in the locality worst hit by the flood. His neighbors were quoted in local newspapers as saying that Farman gave them his wallet and cell phone for safekeeping. He then tied one end of a rope to a pipe and the other around his waist and stood at the edge of the heart of the flooding looking for people to pull out. To those he couldn’t reach either swimming or wading, he would extend a wooden pole for them to grab. He went back 15 times and saved 14 persons before the water got the better of him and he went under.

A writer, Maram Makkawy, wrote: “Farman’s mind was occupied with one thought when he saw people crying for help … what he could do to help them? He did not say, ‘I don’t care.’ He did not stand by as some men did only taking pictures with their expensive cell phones of people fighting when they could help. He did not even justify himself as many did by saying he had a house full of women and that he was their only breadwinner.”

Indeed Farman Ali Khan saved the humanity and reminded everyone that one person with courage and determination can make all the difference in the world.

The family of Farman also performed Hajj on the invitation of the Custodian of the Holy Mosques King Abdullah as Royal Guests. A main artery of Jeddah city has also been named in his name. By honoring Farman, Saudi Arabia has won the hearts of hundreds and thousands of expatriates working in the Kingdom.
