Buy & sell software portal launched by wi-tribe

Posted on 03 February 2012 by Tea Server

News for software developers who want to sell their software locally online! Wi-tribe has just announced the beta launch of wi-tribe Bazaar – Pakistan’s first Buy and Sell software portal – as a platform where Pakistani software developers can sell and monetize their software. The portal, as all things wi-tribe, is slick and the User Interface is very simple to use. This is in beta so developers are warned that there might be a few bugs – and these should be reported so that they can be fixed.

The basic categories that they have defined in the portal include:

  • Anti-virus & anti-spam
  • Business
  • Communication
  • Games
  • Graphics
  • Internet & Networking
  • Mobile Applications
  • PC Widgets
  • Systems Utilities

So all a software developer has to do is fill in the details in the online application form, mention the price, provide a description, the OS the app runs on and send it to w-tribe alongwith a sign up fee of Rs. 1000. According to the information on the portal, wi-tribe will get a contract to the developer within 7 days. In accordance with the contract, the developer will get 65% of all revenues minus taxes. There are some pre-requisites though. The software must have had a minimum of 100 downloads and should have been on the portal for at least 3 months. The shopping experience for buyers is very simple – add to shopping cart, use the scratch card and download! You can also create a wish list if you are not sure how many products you want to end up buying.

According to Ali Fahd, Director Marketing wi-tribe, the wi-tribe Bazaar is powered by wi-tribe scratch cards, allowing the purchase of software through scratch cards available at over 600 locations throughout Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Faisalabad. There is no hassle or requirement of credit cards or other e-commerce payment methods. Understanding the Pakistani market, they are aware of the fact that consumers in Pakistan are familiar with scratch cards and use them frequently for various services. So why not software?

“wi-tribe Bazaar is our effort to support, encourage and proliferate the local IT industry and software developers in particular,” says Ali Fahd. “We understand that there are a lot of developers with products that they would like to sell in the local market. We are also aware of the challenges in monetizing software and applications (apps) in Pakistan. With wi-tribe Bazaar, software developers will enjoy a significant portion of the revenue share as the main beneficiary. The software and apps can be priced at Rs.100, Rs.250, Rs.500 or Rs.1,000 by the developer. wi-tribe Bazaar also offers hundreds of free applications, which will support developers in building and reaching a larger market.”

Currently, wi-tribe Bazaar supports Windows Desktop and Mobile Apps for Android, Blackberry and Symbian. It is a robust platform for selling any windows software and mobile applications such as games, system utilities, wallpapers and customized themes. The platform is open to all types of developers who would like to bring either their commercial product or even a final year university project to their target market, says Ali Fahd.

wi-tribe state that they are only acting as a catalyst by providing the platform. To help build a local ecosystem of software and apps, wi-tribe has taken a conscious decision to open the platform to all – not just to wi-tribe users. They will aggressively market the wi-tribe bazaar in Pakistan.

Test drive the beta version at http://bazaar.wi-tribe.pk.

Provide feedback on the Bazaar to support.bazaar@wi-tribe.pk.

PTCL leads PTA’s 2011 Broadband Quality Of Service survey

Posted on 01 February 2012 by Tea Server

Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) is leading all operators in the country by providing to consumers the highest quality Broadband Internet service, according to the second nationwide Quality of Service (QoS) 2011 survey conducted by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Released last week, the PTA survey places PTCL in category A (more than 95%) at Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Quetta, and in category B (more than 80%) at Karachi for the 1Mbps wire-line broadband service.

The survey was carried out in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi/Islamabad and Muzaffarabad for categories of 512Kbps and 1Mbps in both wire-line and wireless broadband services offered by different operators.

The survey measures operators’ overall performance based on PTA’s key performance indicators (KPIs), including service availability, download and upload bandwidth speed, round-trip time, and service retain-ability.

“Pakistan is the world’s 4th fastest growing broadband market, and PTCL is the country’s single largest broadband service provider with 95% market share,” said Senior Executive Vice President, Naveed Saeed. “In line with the Government’s vision for Broadband growth in Pakistan, we are leading the country’s broadband revolution from the front by making this technology affordable through lowered entry barriers; by geographically bringing the service within the reach of a common user across the country; and by continuous improvements in customer care.”

The PTA terms Broadband as “a significant economic stimulus for any country”, and PTCL DSL is spearheading its exponential growth in Pakistan with a footprint in over 1,100 cities and towns. PTCL is the world’s first operator to introduce “UltraNet” using VDSL2 bonding technology with speeds up to 50mbps on a copper network; and it has deployed the Fiber to the Home (FTTH) technology.

Last year, PTCL again became the world’s first operator to commercially launch 3G EVDO Rev B service. In the form of EVO NITRO, it gives consumers the market’s maximum speed of 9.3MBPs. PTCL has Pakistan’s largest and fastest growing 3G EVDO wireless broadband network, with connectivity and roaming in nearly 200 cities.

“PTCL is one of the most progressive data connectivity providers of the world and Broadband is now a driver for Pakistan’s national GDP,” said Mr. Saeed. “We have a responsibility to develop Pakistan’s technology and data network for establishing the echo system conducive for our country’s economic growth and social uplift, and PTCL is fully primed to facilitate that.”

The first to bring to Pakistan EVO dongles with Internet connectivity, PTCL has followed by launching its innovative 3G EVO Wi-Fi Cloud to connect multiple Wi-Fi devices simultaneously and the first ever PTCL 3G Android EVO Tab with built-in wireless broadband offering Internet connectivity on the go.

This month, PTCL launched Pakistan’s first 3G enabled Android Smartphone, IVIO Icon Pro that offers dual support for both EVDO and GSM/CDMA network.

Strategic Change in RIM Executives

Posted on 25 January 2012 by Tea Server

As the company struggles to compete with competition such as Apple, Google or Microsoft,  it’s investors demand a strategic change that would give them a good return for what they have been investing in Research in Motion (RIM).

Blackberry makers, Research In Motion (RIM) say that there co-chief executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have stepped down due to this struggle that company is constantly enduring against its latest competition such as Google Android, Apple iPhone, Apple iPad or Microsoft Windows Phone.

Mr. Mike Lazaridis, who founded RIM in 1984, is going to become the Vice Chairman of RIM while Mr. Jim Balsillie would be sitting in the board of directors and will have no operational role.

Thorsten Heins, who came into RIM from Siemens Communications in 2007 became chief operating officer of RIM in August, 2011 (according to the company), will now be replacing Mr. Lazaridis and Mr. Balsillie starting from Monday.

An Australian takes issue over skewed article on Pakistan by Time Magazine

Posted on 24 January 2012 by Tea Server

The Editor, Time Magazine

Dear Editor,

I recently returned from a charitable trip to Pakistan, whereby I visited both Karachi and Islamabad. I spoke with several universities, key businesses, prominent business leaders and several religious people from all generations….On the day I returned to the office, someone had placed your magazine (January 16, 2012), on my desk. I read with interest your article on Karachi and the city in doom. For a person to have just returned from the very same place that your magazine described was somewhat bizarre, so I read with great detail your writer (Andrew Marshall’s) account.

Let me begin by saying that I often flick through your magazine and find the articles of great interest, but on this particular day and this particular article, I found certain comments to be both one sided and indeed very negative. I say that because I saw a different Pakistan to what was portrayed in your article. I do not and will not comment on the political or religious problems that the country faces, but I will go so far as to say that not everything is as bad as the image that your magazine paints.

Sure there are deaths in the cities. Please show me a city in the world, that is free from political fighting and unrest.

Sure there are differences in the political party opinions. Please show me a country in the world where the political parties agree.

Sure the innocent are suffering. Please show me a country in the world where wealth and power is equal and the innocent don’t suffer.

Sure corruption is in Pakistan. Please show me a country in the world that is corruption free.

My list could go on, but my point is that Pakistan does have problems…but so does every other country in the world in some way or another. However, in the case of ALL other nations, there are often good things to report and the media goes out of its way to promote these good things across the globe, whenever possible. The ridiculous amount of shootings in the USA are balanced off by the success of Google, Microsoft and Apple. The financial dilemmas of Greece are lost in the marketing of the Greek Islands as a holiday destination of choice. The child slave industry of India, is brushed under the carpet in favour of the nation’s growth in the global software boom. What I am trying to say, is that someone needs to look further into Pakistan and see that there are millions of great stories to write about, which would portray the country in a different light, to that what is being portrayed by your article.

When I was in Pakistan, I visited a towel manufacturing company (Alkaram Towels). They produced some $60million in export in 2011 and are aiming at $85million in 2012. A substantial increase in sales…in a recession I would remind you. The company was started by the current Chairman, Mr. Mehtab Chawla, at the tender age of nine, after his father passed away. Today the very man employs 3000 staff. Now that’s a story.

I visited universities of NED, Hamdard, Karachi, Szabist and NUST. The students are unbelievably intelligent. They spend their spare time developing APPS for android and apple. They are involved in cutting edge technology and no one in the world knows this. Why not send a reporter to Pakistan to look into this. Why not research good things in this nation, rather than just the bad things. At NUST (National Institution for Science and Technology – Islamabad)) there were 38,000 applications for medicine. There are only 83 seats for the medicine course  on offer. The competition is unbelievable. In  short it pushes the best to be even better. But the world doesn’t know this. Why ? Because no one wants to report on it, or no one knows about it…or both !!

Please do not get me wrong. I understand that news is news, but it is high time that the western world stopped promoting these terrorists and political wars in Pakistan and started to write something that would help the nation. Something positive. If we really care about global partnerships and economic growth, then I suggest we try and give Pakistan a helping hand. There are 180 million people in Pakistan, 65% are under the age of 25. The youth of Pakistan is its strength.. it is like a sleeping giant. If you think that India is a booming nation. I suggest you stop a second and look at Pakistan. Given a little help from the western world, Pakistan can become a dominant economy. She doesn’t want aid and she doesn’t need money… she just wants the chance to be seen in a different light.  I believe we have a fundamental obligation to assist. The only question is, who will reach out first.

Warmest regards,

Tony Lazaro

The 5 Best Technological Advances Since 2000

Posted on 22 January 2012 by Tea Server

There have been a lot of technological advances since 2000 that deserve their place in history. Its amazing to think how far we have come in such a short time, with gadgets seemingly taking leaps and bounds every year and improving on already amazing ideas and technology. These not only make our lives easier but also help more products enter the marketplace based upon these technologies.

Best Technological Advances The 5 Best Technological Advances Since 2000

There are five advances that I think really stand out more than the others simply because they have turned the world upside down with their place in our world, making it easier for consumers and businesses alike to reach more people, bring in new products and generally live a better life.

1. Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is now found in just about every store, hotel, house, and café around the world, making it possible to connect to the internet without stringing a bunch of cables into the back of the computer. Since this advance, it has helped cell phones, tablets, laptops and other devices enter the marketplace more successfully as well. When our wifi goes down we forget how amazing this technology actually is.

Do Check: How Satellite Internet is Changing our Media and News Sources

2. Social media

Sites like Facebook and Twitter are extremely technologically advanced and it’s not just about helping others stay in touch with each other. Businesses rely on this social media more than anyone else in order to reach their target demographics, get feedback on their products and market successfully. A number of technologies have imitated these sites and the academic world has latched on by offering courses in social media.

3. The Smart Phone

The cell phone was advanced but the smart phone has gone above and beyond. The Android and the iPhone have popularized the concept but there are many manufacturers who have entered the arena. With apps becoming more and more popular as a way of doing business, the smart phone has internet access, a camera, gps, and many other features, making it an integral part of one’s life. It’s no longer just for making phone calls – it’s used for school, shopping, business, gaming, research and other aspects of life.

4. Electric Cars

There’s no longer a need to use gas or petrol to fuel cars. With the advancement of electrical and hybrid cars, it’s truly a green solution for the earth. Since the first prototype was designed, many manufacturers have piggy-backed on the idea to create more designs that use just electric or a combination of electric/petrol. As technology advances are made, the electric car is getting larger and faster as well.

5. 3D technology

3D technology is getting smaller and more readily available. The technology is going into televisions, smart phones, cinemas, laptops and everywhere else. Over the past 5 years, there’s been more 3D movies released to the big screen than ever before and the trend will continue as more television brands are releasing 3D televisions to the public. The 3D glasses are more advanced than the old paper ones and it’s changing the way people think about watching television and playing video games. However glasses less technology on a mass scale will bring this even further.

Paragon RT can help bring your technology to the masses with a rapid prototyping service and can work with low volume production options as well.

Candy Pot does well on App stores worldwide

Posted on 18 January 2012 by Tea Server

Very often I am asked why I put so many hours into my work at P@SHA, why whenever I am on a visit to Lahore or Islamabad I try and meet as many people as I can. Admittedly, at the end of a long day trip, I am totally wiped out. So why is it worth it? Or is it worth it at all? I think it is and the reason for that is that in every corner of this country there is interesting work being done in technology – and I love being part of it. I love talking about it. I love cheering on each and every person and company in this space because of their passion, their technical competence and the image they project of a Pakistan that is so different from the one that is projected in Western media.

One such story is that of a young man I met some years ago. He was trying to put up the pretense of being a blogger but had hardly written any posts. He did some microblogging on Twitter and Facebook but generally he was busy tinkering around with Microsoft technology. Having graduated from NUCES-FAST Karachi, he had worked at several companies but the entrepreneurial bug bit him and he  was anxious to start his own venture and take it wherever it was destined to go.But one makes ones own destiny I am told. And Munir  and his partner Amirhave proven that this is indeed true.tart his own venture and take it wherever it was destined to go.They set up Pi Labs which is a company that truly believes in the power

of mobility. This team of young, energetic and dedicated bunch of engineers & designers have always been eager to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Their passion for mobile software and their ability to deliver engaging solutions has brought them much acclaim. Early adoption of Windows Phone 7 meant that they were one of the first companies globally to deliver an app to the Microsoft Marketplace although their expertise is not limited to Windows Phone 7. It encompasses all platforms including iOS, Android and Palm’s WebOS.

The latest in their stable of applications is Candy Pot, a simple yet addictive game. It is a new app available for the iPhone and the iPod touch. There are two versions of the game – a full version which consists of 45 levels and a lite version which comprises 15 levels. As soon as you start the app, you are introduced to the main character – TinTin.

The objective of the game is to somehow move a spherical candy to a candy pot by using the basic principles of physics. A few friends –  biscuit bars, cotton candies and ice pipes – can help with the task. Some of the candies are heavier or bouncier than others. Each type of object is introduced to you at a different level of the game.

Features include 3 delicious worlds, 45 challenges, 2 awesome candy balls, 5 different objects and hundreds of hints to help you get through! This promotional video is worth watching.

Candy Pot has certainly performed well since its launch on November 18th 2011.

  1. Immediately after launch it was ranked in the top 50 games in more than 17 countries including US, China and India in both Puzzle and Family Category .
  2. It was ranked at #1 position in the Pakistani App Store for several days in both the Puzzle and Family Games Category (Above Cut The Rope and Angry Birds)
  3. It was amongst the top 25 in China during the Christmas/New Year holidays in both the Puzzle and Family Games Category.
  4. Candy Pot was amongst the top 10 in India last month in both the Puzzle and Family Games Category

Well done boys! All of us who know you are absolutely certain that this is the beginning of many more interesting apps that will top all stores worldwide.

Posted on 12 January 2012 by Tea Server

How to flash YOUR MOBILE COMPANY AND MODEL
Install new firmware in YOUR MOBILE COMPANY AND MODEL
Install new ROM in YOUR MOBILE COMPANY AND MODEL

Arabic support firmware of YOUR MOBILE COMPANY AND MODEL
YOUR MOBILE COMPANY AND MODEL Arabic firmware
