Tea it down

Courier Services saying no?!

December 4th, 2008

I returned from Iraq recently, bearing small souveniers for a few close friends. Incidently, one of those friends lives in the U.A.E, and is down to visit his family in Islamabad - his father is seriously unwell, please pray “amma yujeeb-ul muz-tarra iza da’ao wa yakshey fuuss soo” for his well being.

Anyhow, I wanted to send across a mini version of the Quran Pak, for his father’s well being. And I went to one courier service, a very popular one infact- and you can imagine my amazement when they said, “we’re not allowed”. I was astounded. What is the country coming to! you can’t ship the Holy Book? Then they explained..that be-adabi (disrespect) is possible. Someone might throw the box or treat it roughly, and they can’t take the sin on their heads. I tried to appeal to the humanity in them, and rouse their compassion…that it was for someone seriously unwell - but they weren’t allowed to accept.

I tried another courier service, and another - finally, at the third one, the owner was a lady, and I was able to appeal to her the reasons why it was NECCESSARY this be sent right away  - my friend is leaving shortly too…

God bless her soul (Ameen). She had it sent.

I was taken by surprise by the refusal of the others…. I mean, for religious things.
